So there I was, tea in hand, watching the morning garden birds:
4 jackdaws - a parent and 3 offspring STILL believing the parent should do the food search and bring it to them
2 magpies - handsome, confidently strutting around and well focussed
5 assorted blackbirds- too busy scrapping and wasting precious energy instead of none of them getting to eat the muesli and suet that I'd laid up for them
1 robin - who npis in and out quickly whilst all this silly argy bargy is going on
a constant stream of blue tits, willow tits, great tits on the sunflower heart feeder.
4 goldfinches - earnestly feeding on the niger seeds feeder, taking their time
6 woodpidgeons- somewhat unwelcome scroungers ,intimidating others with their pushy, bossy habits

and then, down from above came this Sparrowhawk. Took up a fleeting 4 second spot on a branch in the Cherry tree and NOT A SINGLE BIRD to be seen anywhere! All gone in a flash. None came back for 20 minutes.
Poor old Johnny No mates ,apart from a seasonal mate to nest with, he seems to have no one to share his day with,
    Jenny

Willow Tit Jenny are you sure? they are rare birds now and even rarer in a garden, perhaps a Coal or Marsh Tit.

I will bow to your better knowledge Strongy. They all look so similar - black cap, marsh tit, willow tit, coal tit...

Think I saw a Goldcrest the other day, it was in silhouette. It was tiny, smaller than a Wren.
