    Hi

I have come across this site a few times and finally got around to joining. It will be nice to interact with fellow enthusiasts and I look forward to contributing what I can to the forum.

A brief bit about myself. Well as I couldnt use my own name as it said it was already taken, my screen name is an obvious clue as to the sort of gardening that I am passionate about.

For many years I have grown and used a wide variety of Herbs and wild flowers. I currently have over 500 different Herbs that is always ever increasing. I use herb in its commonly accepted broad form as any bulb, plant, tree, shrub that can be used for food, flavouring, medicine and perfume. And added to that I grow as much fruit and vegetables as possible.

I have always found the use of plants fascinating and find the variety, beauty and forms are endless. Most people wrongly assume herb gardens to be just leafy possibly boring to look at plants. But they forget that the line between herbs and plants was not so clearly defined in the not so distant past.

So the plants I grow are some of the most beautiful to look at and have the added bonus that everything I grow can be used in some way or another.

One of my biggest passions is my physic garden. although in general my whole plot is a physic garden really. But I have a specific garden that is just for the proven and still used powerful medicinal plants. This includes some very poisonous specimens, some very unusual and rare plants from around the globe and also many Native plants.

Native plants are also my big love and I have far too many to go into! And most of them have at some time been used for food, medicine or strewing herbs so fit nicely into any herb garden. As do many wildflowers from around the world which I also include in my gardens.

I do have some purely ornamental plants here and there, but on the whole just about everything in the garden can be used in some way, whether medicinally or otherwise. Obviously the plants in the poison garden dont get used however!! But my whole garden has ornamental value anyway. The beauty and layout of it is just as important. I like it all to have visual appeal as well as uses. And most people who see my garden are blown away by how colourful and beautiful it is.

The layout of my garden varies by area and I have different areas grouped by usage and themed, others just wild and free. I have a nice herber that I designed on the medieval layout for example with only plants from that era within it. I do have a slightly formal area, but the majority is set out in a very free flowing way and things are allowed to self-seed with abandon. So alot of the areas are very naturalistic. Its still managed, but I do enjoy letting things seed around. Its so easy to just pull out what you dont want after all, but often you get some beautiful combinations by allowing things their head.

A lot of time and effort has gone into my plot over the years and I enjoy every aspect from propagating to freezing in the depths of winter getting things ready for Spring. Due to the wide variety of plants I grow, there is never really a dull moment in my garden and there is always something beautiful to look at or pick. And a million things to always be getting on with!

Anyway, I think thats more than enough to give an idea of what Im about. Look forward to getting to know you all.

    Jason.

      Welcome to GC, Jason :sign0016:

Your garden sounds wonderful!! Can't wait for the time you post some pictures.

I'm new to gardening so I'm still learning; but, thanks to the lovely bunch here (present and past) I'm gradually building up a little bit of knowledge (at a stage in life when I'm forgetting a lot of knowledge :heehee: )

I'd like to get to a stage where a part of my garden becomes a self-seeding wonderland, but I'm a long way off that yet!

Nice to meet another wildflower enthusiast. I do love my native plants. I have a great variety of them and all of them are the genuine article. I have searched out many over the years in my area and been lucky enough to have been given permission by kind landowners (after a lot of tracking down!) to harvest wild material for propagating so most of my wild flowers and native shrubs and trees are from genuine wild populations (by permission of course!).

The same actually with all my other plants. Most of them are wildflowers from around the world, the straight species. And I have always tried to ensure I have the genuine true species. Very important when using them for food or medicine obviously!

Hello and welcome Jason the Apothocary. I for one look forward to your input, I like herbs (not just the usual suspects) but by the sounds of it you know infinitely more than me on the subject.
