...I WILL delay sowing seed until there is enough light about to stop them being leggy in early growth!
Every year I sow toms and chillies just that little bit too early after getting impatient and wanting to be able start the season. Well 2013 will be a 'patience is a virtue' year.

    Probably.

I don't find chillies too much of a problem for early sowing, as they are a slow grower. Toms can get too leggy if you're not careful.

I've got some chilli seedlings that were doing OK when I went away last month (only just got back) and shall have my first look at them this morning. They're in a heated propagator in the greenhouse where they can get as much light as possible. I over winter my mature chillies in there as well. Some friends have been watering things so I shall keep my fingers crossed.

Some other varieties that James Swann kindly sent us shall be started, indoors, in Feb and shall be pampered a bit (or maybe a lot) :heehee:

Can't promise anything except that you will hear me next year.
Good luck to all in their growing ventures.
May your seeds of good fortune be grown to the successes of a ripe harvest.

Yes I'm going to delay sowing in 2013. This year was my first year of growing from seed and anything that said " sow between Feb and March" got sown on the first of feb. I kept them in the conservatory and by mid March it was a bit packed in there. Novice mistake I supose . Next year I shall delay until March for most things, but I have lost the conservatory as we have turned it into a play room for my son. I am going to start on the building of the new greenhouse over the Christmas break though.

What does everyone consider a good time to sow tomato seed, I have an unheated conservatory and unheated polytunnel and greenhouse. I am intending to grow them in the polytunnel

I promise to stop dithering and just crack on with the last few bits of the back garden. I've figured if you aim to get it right first time, then you'll be there forever. I'm just going to get it done, then I can always change bits if I need to.

I sowed my Chilli seeds on 1st January 2012, and they're still producing chillis today! Good luck, though :)

              Been there, done that! :heehee:

This time was India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Very hot and humid and extremely tiring with all the rushing around. We need a holiday now! :)

For the last half of our travels we had some monsoons as it was the rainy season! It wasn't all sunshine :) but it was very hot and sticky. I should have tried to bring the heat back! :blue thumb:

On our way up in to the mountains of Java, in the rain forest, it was difficult trekking.

                    Hiya Sue.

I would say mid-late March is plenty soon enough. You will probably need to start them of on the windowsill or something, before potting on and keeping under glass. You will also need to be prepared to bring them in at night, especially if a cold night is forecast. Think in terms of sustaining a minimum temperature of at least 10c:blue thumb:
