I've noticed that wobble in the sunset times too.

Have we worked out a planetary motion reason for it yet?

Its simples, I think. Earth spins on an axis that is not perpendicular to the centroid of the orbit of the sun. That's why we have seasons.

A separate but related point is that contrary to popular belief, the solstices don't technically relate to the day when daylight hours and night time hours are equal, because that day differs depending on where you are in the world. Solstice is actually a precise moment in time. It is the moment that the sun is at 90 degrees to the equator on one of the two days of the year when there is a switch over between the bulk of one hemisphere facing the sun over the other. This year, apparently, it happened at 11:11 am but it can vary because of course our orbit wobbles (for lots of good reasons), and because the earth is actually wobbling on its own axis on a fixed oscillation but with a 'noise' element too.

Put these two points together, and it becomes abundantly clear why sunset time shifts ever so slightly out of synchronising with the solstice.

      See, simple:biggrin:

Apparently the Earth's wobble is noticeable if watching the Moon's orbit

I'm pleased I'm not the only one that wobbles :heehee:

Clueless, a few weeks ago I was at the Jaipur observatory. You would have loved it. It was built 300 years ago and is a series of stone/brick/marble instruments that are outdoors. They are all based on the shadows thrown by the sun and are extremely large and were used to tell the time (accurate to within 2 seconds) and all the points of interest in the celestial sphere.

It was built by Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh - a brilliant man.

For arguments sake, could it not be the moon wobbling? :)
