Difficult one because it is a case of "perception".

Interesting that, on the one hand, he says he doesn't want to offend anyone, but, the fact that he *has*, he ignores and says he doesn't intend to change it!? To my mind, that dilutes his claim to not to want to offend anyone :dunno:

My view is: it is a difficult one because it is all a case of perception!

I can see how someone could be offended by it and it is in his front garden for all (public) to see. Just imagine if your own grand daughter saw it on her way to the shops/nursery/library/church and came home and mimiced that you to: would you find it amusing/shocking/offensive/other? :dunno:

On the face of it, is it offensive? Having had it pointed out to him that "someone" does find it offensive - does his refusal to alter it make it less offensive, or more offensive?

Who is it aimed at? If it is for his own amusement, why not restrict it to his own rear garden?

Seriously? I'm getting sick and tired of walking down the street and hearing the "F" word every turn from children quite, quite young simply because "others" do not find it offensive. I do! But, that is a matter of my "perspective". (Incidentally, covered by public order offences ;) )

The real question here is: where do you draw the line? And it has far deeper issues attached than a simple - amused or offended.

Interesting that the word "respect" isn't involved  Now, turn the question around: Is it respectful or not? Would you get the same answers? (Would you even *want* the same answers?) See? It's all a matter of perspective!

No not offended as I realise all the hard work that has gone in to it....

just a bit of fun but maybe the person who moaned , it could be pointed at them ?

If I was the house owner I wouldn't remove it - but, of course, I wouldn't be able to carve a hedge like that, anyway! :heehee:

I see no offence in it and, to be a bit pedantic, it's an American gesture similar to our 'two finger' salute - which also wouldn't offend me.

As with our equivalent, it also depends on which direction the appendage is facing when viewed by the offendee. So, if the 'presumed' offended person (although the police statement said they hadn't received an official complaint) walks up and down that road it can only be construed as possibly offensive half the time. Therefore the other half of the time he is not offended. (P.S. please read 'he' as referring to either sex and any sexual determination.)

Such gestures are only offensive if aimed for such a purpose and directed to someone specific. Otherwise, they are just raised fingers.

Trying to think logically (difficult whilst I'm laughing), if the owner reshaped the top part of the 'finger' where the fingernail is, in order to do away with the nail and turn it into a slight spiral shape, it would no longer have a chance of offending.

If I was sitting in judgement at trial, if a case of this sort was brought before me, I would throw it out for wasting the time of the court! :nonofinger:

If there is a petty mind, in that person's neighbourhood, that finds this sort of thing offensive I think that they need some counselling. :heehee:

Reading behind the words (if that's possible with the Mail) someone in the council may have decided that it could possibly offend someone (reminiscent of when a council near us banned people from showing the Union Flag) and is taking the matter too far. The ruling party lost their majority because of that stupidity!
