Peanut butter for birds.

Hi all,

Would the birds eat out of date peanut butter? I went to put it on my toast this morning and it 5 months out of date. Will it do them any harm?

Very sticky just by itself to feed, would be ideal if you could mix it with other bird seed or oats etc.

Probably not a good idea as almost all peanut butter contains salt which is unsuitable for birds.

Now, when you say its 5 months out of date - do you mean past the 'Best Before Date'? - if so it will still be perfectly OK for you to eat, but the taste may not be as good.

 

I think the amount is negligible and if water is provided nearby shouldn't be an issue.

I'd be more concerned about the herring gulls that congregate around the local McD's and consume large quantities of burgers and fries (which they have become quite proficient at unwrapping from the bins).

 

I did not think peanut butter ever goes out of date, that is why it is on the list for "fall out shelter" supplies.

Anyway, yes they will eat it. If you take a pine cone and spoon goop it in the crevises and roll the cone in seeds then hang it outside, yummy for them.

 

Yes, Shiney, the expired dates etc. can be misleading to some. I never observe them, and always use my nose or taste buds. It truly is a waste of money to do other wise. And with this practice I have "never" got sick.
