I would imagine Strelitzia juncea is probably slower.

I am on holiday in Cape Town and went to Kirstenbosch Gardens yesterday
There were some really impressive clumps of this Strelitzia.
I will post photos when I get back to the UK on the weekend.

      longk,
I think we would struggle in this country to get such fantastic looking plants.
I found from growing Strelitzias when I lived in SA, and then here in the UK, that they do much better when grown in the ground. They have quite thick roots which seem to prefer space.

            Pete,
How do you get your Strelitzia to flower like that.
Mine was lucky to put out 2 or 3 flowers a season, max.

Must say I don't particularly like the look of this one, but each to their own.

On Pete's recommendation years ago I put my S reginae in the ground which was difficult because I am on a rock base with clay soil. So it was pickaxe by t'other other and off we went. No regrets, the plant quickly doubled.

My S nicolai is in a large pot and going mad so we shall just have to see this year.

The Iochroma going in the ground is amazing and is over two meters tall at the moment and blooming and looking so incredible!

                Pete ,
Strelizia outdoor is on my list , got even few ideas of how to keep it warmer in winter ,
but really don`t know how will it cope with the rain !!
Some species are harder then other really wonder wich one is the hardest of all.
