I suspect that that amateur forecaster has a grasp of statistics, and possibly even 'thermal inertia'.

The latter is a physical phenomenon that explains why it is often warmer after summer solstice than before, and colder after winter solstice than before. All summer long, the suns rays gently warm the ground. In winter the sunshine isn't really strong enough to warm us, so we are kept from freezing to death by the warmth trapped in the ground slowly radiating back out. Around the end of January (for us at least) that stored warmth starts to run out, but the sun hasn't yet gained its strength (still too low in the sky), so we get a few weeks when the ground has run out of warmth and the sun isn't putting it back yet in significant amounts. Then by March, the sun builds up enough strength to start the process again, warming the ground.

Of course it doesn't hurt if you live right next to the sea, because water makes an excellent storage heater to keep the winter chill off:)

I do hope you will post Clue after the fact and advise.

In the meantime we are quite mild here with day temps of around 16c and nights fluctuating between 8-10c. Sunny days with some puffy white clouds and rain always threatened but seems to not be able to find us ... I had to water the garden yesterday and things like Hibiscus (rosa sinensis) and Cestrums are really suffering. Strangely, the Brugmansias and Iochromas are going out of control and are meters tall at this time of the year!

The report I read was in the Sun.....I know not always a trusted source of info :heehee:, but to be fair they didn't make a song and dance about it and it was sort of sneaked in on page 20. 'Experts' from the weather channel and the met office's Helen Chivers were quoted giving the info I mentioned at the start of the thread

"Apparently" the south and east will see the lowest 'daytime' temps and the north of the Country will see the lowest 'nightime' temps!!! , we're all going to freeze ;):heehee:

Well I won't need to invest in a fancy dress costume then; I'll just dress like an icepop!

It's coming! Maybe I'd better get my parsnips out the ground before they go the same way as wooly mammoths.

So, to translate that, its going to get cold for a couple of weeks and we might even see the odd snowflake or a bit of sleet.

Anybody would think it was January or something...........
