I agree with Zigs :dbgrtmb:. I've always liked the song and the way it's sung.

Here I go again with the boring bits on the history of songs/singers and the connections :heehee:

Don McLean wrote that song 41 years ago about Vincent Van gogh and his art. Don enjoyed writing songs about people and a month after releasing 'Vincent' he released 'American Pie'. This was another massive hit and was about Buddy Holly and the effect Buddy's death had on him.
This you tube view has had over 16 million views because it shows the words as well.

The writing of these songs inspired the writing of the song 'Killing Me Softly With His Song'. This was recorded by Roberta Flack a year after the other two songs and was also a massive hit. This song was about Don McLean :)

As a tribute to another excellent singer/songwriter - here is the original version of the song. Lori Lieberman wrote the original poem and the song was written by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel for her to sing. This is the first recording of the song and Roberta picked it up and made her hit from it. Lori is a very good folk singer.

This one was always (literally always) the last song to be played in The Deck in Redcar. This tradition ran for such a long period of time that it both pre-dates my clubbing days, and apparently continued long after I'd grown out of going clubbing.

With themes and horses, this has to be one of the most popular theme tunes of its genre.

Frankie Laine made many hits from TV and film title songs even though he wasn't always the original singer. Amongst the theme tunes he sang for the film/tv programmes were 'Rawhide', 'Blazing Saddles', Gunfight At The OK Corral', 'Gunslinger, 3.10 To Yuma and 'Blazing Saddles'. He had bigger hits with some theme songs than the singers who performed them for the films or TV. Typically ones like 'High Noon' (originally sung by Tex Ritter) and the song above, 'Champion The Wonder Horse'.

He sold over 100 million records, had his own TV programmes and made quite a number of films.

It was this version of 'Geogia On My Mind' that inspired Ray Charles to make his version of it. Frankie Laine is singing it in the 1950 film 'When You're Smilin'. Frankie died in 2007.
