Oh that's a shame Freddy, this is where I got mine:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140368667501 - they only took 2 or 3 days to arrive in the post, he must be selling fresh seed as mine germinated within a week.

That appears to be a substandard size/split/divided pack as it's only 30 seeds and a standard pack from Johnsons contains 120 seeds, such as from here (same seller) and with a use by 2015 use by date http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140825823290?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Did you get your seeds in original packaging with use by dates?

Yes you are right Scrungee, the seller has re-packaged into poly bags (with a label saying sow by 2015) and a B/W photo-copy of the growing instructions. I'm still happy though as I only intend to grow a dozen at most.

OK, I suppose if you'd bought the full size double packs, sown the lot and got 2 kg average size onions from them all, you'd have got over 1,000 lbs of onions. But I do like onions (and leeks and spring onions and shallots and garlic and chives).

Same here, we get through a lot of onions, I will be growing a couple of hundred 'normal' sets of different varieties including shallots plus garlic of course. Onions are the one thing I'm self-sufficient in, they store so well my last years harvest will keep us going till mid-summer. If these giant onions prove a success I will grow more, just that I'm not so sure how long they will store for.

          Hiya John.

Already ordered from Johnsons:blue thumb: I saw those on e-bay, but decided on a full pack.

And I thought that I'd got a serious allium habit.

I sowed some more Kelsae, Robinsons Mammoth Red and some Ailsa Craig (standard size onions) today together with a load of leeks and my T&M spring planting garlic has just been delivered - 7 packs of 9 bulbs, so at least 300 plump cloves with loads of runts for eating. Plus I've got autumn planted onion sets & garlic and I'm also sowing early spring onions under lights.

              Hello chums:)

My replacement seed turned up today, so I'll sow them tomorrow. I'll put them in pots to be placed on a windowsill somewhere. Something that puzzles me is....in the past, I've had problems with germination when I've used a heated propagator (sowing in March)and made subsequent sowings without any heat, which were successful. At a guess I'd say that the minimum temperatures at that time would be maybe 5-7c? Also, Onions can be sown outdoors from March(?) onwards. Any thoughts?

I can't explain that Freddy, I always get better results using my heated propagator.

                Hiya John.

I was wondering if one can give too much heat, even if it's not (on the face of it) very much?

Freddy, yes it is possible to overheat seeds so they won't germinate and getting them damp and very hot might even kill them. Have you a max/min thermometer and what are your readings?

                Hiya John

I got myself one of those min/max electronic thermometers that Scrunge uses. My minimum is around 14c and max around 25c, although one day it got up to around 28c. In the back of my mind I seem to recall the phrase 'gentle heat':dunno:

I'm a bit worried about my onions, they seem to have missed the 'crook' stage and are getting taller too quick:dunno: my temperatures are the same as yours Freddy,it's a job keeping them on an even keel without a TC propagator....not growing onions before it's hard to judge how they should be but they look healthy enough...so far...

Sounds like they need more light maybe?

Speaking from experience with other veggie seeds I think it helps to get a consistent temp range with no major swings. I'm no expert on onion seeds though.
