2013 Onion Growing Challenge

That appears to be a substandard size/split/divided pack as it's only 30 seeds and a standard pack from Johnsons contains 120 seeds, such as from here (same seller) and with a use by 2015 use by date http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140825823290?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Did you get your seeds in original packaging with use by dates?

 

OK, I suppose if you'd bought the full size double packs, sown the lot and got 2 kg average size onions from them all, you'd have got over 1,000 lbs of onions. But I do like onions (and leeks and spring onions and shallots and garlic and chives).

Already ordered from Johnsons I saw those on e-bay, but decided on a full pack.

 

And I thought that I'd got a serious allium habit.

I sowed some more Kelsae, Robinsons Mammoth Red and some Ailsa Craig (standard size onions) today together with a load of leeks and my T&M spring planting garlic has just been delivered - 7 packs of 9 bulbs, so at least 300 plump cloves with loads of runts for eating. Plus I've got autumn planted onion sets & garlic and I'm also sowing early spring onions under lights.

My replacement seed turned up today, so I'll sow them tomorrow. I'll put them in pots to be placed on a windowsill somewhere. Something that puzzles me is....in the past, I've had problems with germination when I've used a heated propagator (sowing in March)and made subsequent sowings without any heat, which were successful. At a guess I'd say that the minimum temperatures at that time would be maybe 5-7c? Also, Onions can be sown outdoors from March(?) onwards. Any thoughts?

I was wondering if one can give too much heat, even if it's not (on the face of it) very much?

I got myself one of those min/max electronic thermometers that Scrunge uses. My minimum is around 14c and max around 25c, although one day it got up to around 28c. In the back of my mind I seem to recall the phrase 'gentle heat'

 

I'm a bit worried about my onions,they seem to have missed the 'crook' stage and are getting taller too quick my temperatures are the same as yours Freddy,it's a job keeping them on an even keel without a TC propagator....not growing onions before it's hard to judge how they should be but they look healthy enough...so far...

 

Sounds like they need more light maybe?
