Poor Chutney was quite confused by all the white stuff: "Where'd the grass go!??"

Hope ours don't: both boys have got exams :help:

Had a bit of a concern this morning, both had a Spanish exam; one travels to school by bus (he was ok), but other has to use the train. Opened up the news this morning to see a "breaking news" story that there was a fire at Victoria Station and no trains were running to or fro. I was late getting up and the only solution would have been for me to drive him in .... I don't like driving in snow, least of all under pressure! Fortunately, his train was ok  Don't think the world could cope with the sight of me first thing in the morning :heehee:

I wish I could find the photos that I took when we had a really bad snowfall ('96 I think) when I lived in Scotland.

I got up in the morning, and felt really rough so phoned my boss to tell him I wouldn't be in to work, before curling up in my armchair in front of the fire; I watched the snow falling for a while, and then nodded off. When I woke, it was like a different world - my car was completely buried, and I couldn't see the garden wall either.

We had a Jack Russell at the time, and I opened the back door and he jumped out over the steps (also hidden under the snow) and sort of 'flumfed' into the deep snow; I saw the snow moving and he reappeared and clambered straight back into the house. I stood there saying to him to go for a pee, but he just shot me a look as if to say "you go out there and pee, coz I ain't".

In the end, I had to get a shovel out, and dig paths around the back garden like a wee maze (the snow was a good 3ft deep and more) just so he would go out for a pee.

That night, I went to my neighbours and we sat in front of their roaring coal fire playing cards, and we could see truck drivers stuck on the main road sitting in their cabs also playing cards - my neighbour made a pot of soup, and took flasks out to the drivers to keep them going (in fact they were there for a couple of days, and she kept them going with food of all sorts, bless her); then, in a fit of madness, once the kids were in bed we decided to go out and build something in the snow that the kids could see in the morning - we built a snow 'Buddha' which the kids loved.

The following day, roads still closed and thoroughly blocked, my boss asked if I could walk to work to check the premises over as he lived in a village nearly 20 miles away; I headed off on foot, and although it was eerily quiet, it was also really nice as there were many other people walking and chatting to each other whilst wading through the snow - and even complete strangers helping each other through the snow.

      Happy memories.

I remember the snow of 1963, my last year of school in the UK (Luton) and sadly I had to go as I lived in walking distance and it was up to my knees (I was 4'8" at the time) but there were not many of us there and even less teachers! I also remember one in Buckinghamshire in the 80s but I can't remember exactly when it was but have lovely pictures of our cottage.

        :roflol: :roflol: :roflol:

Last winter, we shovelled a "pathway" so the hens could have some free range time; they are not keen on snow! :nonofinger:

Way back in the day, I visited a "fortune teller". She told me that I would pass my driving test first time; then, she hesitated, shook her head, thought for a bit and said: "But *not* the first time" (cryptic :heehee: )

Fast forward and I got the date for my driving test :hapydancsmil: Day arrived ... but, overnight there had been a substantial snowfall. So, test re-scheduled! Took the test on the re-scheduled date ... passed "first" time :heehee:

I remember in the early 80's cycling down lanes that had been cleared with drifts 8ft high. Havent seen drifts locally since then and went many years without even a covering. I live in a part of leicestershire that in recent years has escaped from snow but only a few miles away they had several inches.

I'd take a guess at '82 or '83 - I remember a corker when I was a youngster, and having to go with my mum to rescue my dad from a job he was working on which was at the opposite end of town. I remember clinging on to our Labrador for warmth and balance as I slid around on the red vinyl back seat of my mum's Vauxhall Chevette - that car went when I was nine ('85), and it was a couple of years before that. '84 I remember was a summer heatwave and a drought, hence my thinking of '82 or '83 for the snow.

The first time I saw a snow drift, it was when we'd not long moved to the sticks (I lived in the sticks for a while in my youth).

My dad and I were walking the dogs, and I was amused by the snow drift, and climbed up and walked on it. My dad was much less impressed, having seen it all before. I commented to my dad about it taking my weight. He explained it was the sheer weight of snow had compressed itself, plus the freezing conditions had made a crust on it, then he said "see what happens if you jump on it though". I did, and promptly vanished deep into the snow (literally up to my arm pits). I was stuck fast, going nowhere. My dad hadn't bargained on this, he'd expected me to be able to climb out but the weight of snow was squeezing me, and every slight movement I managed was just dislodging it causing it to pack me in even tighter. Lucky for me my dad was strong as an ox (still is, but probably less so nowadays). With great effort he managed to dislodge me enough so that I could start to help myself, and between the combined efforts of both of us, I'm still here to tell the tale:dbgrtmb:

            I wont do that again.

And 1975 was a heatwave the year we were married.

And when we used to get seasons.

Victoria look forward to seeing your photos
