I remember it well - I had just become a new Mum with my 1st child. Happy memories for me!

I was just a young 'erk in the rif raf then and stationed at RAF Wattisham near Stowmarket in Suffolk. The snow was really deep and there were huge drifts so we were called out to find and dig out several farmers sheep. I've never been so cold and wet after wading waist deep in the snow trying to feel for, with sticks and hands, sheep that had sheltered against walls and dips and had been covered in the snow, don't ever want to do that again.:hate-shocked: :heehee:

I was about 7 yrs old.
We all thought it was fun, for a while.
But I can remember it going on and on, and also remember how good spring felt that year.

I was there, but I don't remember it. That was my first winter.

Although I was only 3 at the time, I do have some memories of walking with my parents along the lanes around the Suffolk village where I grew up and seeing nothing but towering banks of snow piled up on either side of the road.

Armandii, I can imagine how cold and bleak it must have been at Wattisham at that time, Wattisham airfield is actually the highest point in East Suffolk, which isn't saying much I know, but when the East wind blows in around these parts, 'thaas hully cowd bor.'

Incidentally, as a boy, I remember going to one or two air shows at Wattisham in the 60s, I guess you were still there at the time?

Yes I was, Trunky, from round late '62 to '67 when there were 3 Squadrons at Wattisham, No.111 Sqn [my Squadron], No.56 Sqn, these two were Lightning aircraft equipped, and No.41 Sqn which was Javelin aircraft equipped. No.111 Squadron was at that time the RAF Aerobatic Squadron retaining that duty after they had changed over from the Hawker Hunter [which were painted black.].

Yes remember it well Kath.. We lived in the New Forest then in a tiny village & we were cut off completely.. We were all cosy in our house on the hill.. I used to sit & daydream out of the window as it was so beautiful... I think that house was my most favourite ever that we lived in..
We all dug our way around the village until all the roads were eventually cleared.. No snow ploughs or gritters used to go there..
I really enjoyed it to a point but it was not so much fun as supplies started to run out, but I did love standing in line around at the local dairy farm with jugs for milk, still warm from the cows.. We made butter & cream cheese as well with it.. Yum yum..
:help: I didn't like all the burst pipes though..!!

I was 7 at the time, but I don't remember it, but I suppose that I would have thought it was fun. I saw the program about it last night, on BBC2 I think. Hard to imagine what it must have been like, as it went on for two months solid! In one part of the program, they described/showed a group of folks that were stranded and decided to walk the four miles to the nearest village. They had to battle through snow-drifts 14ft deep, 14ft deep!!! If you get a chance, definitely worth a watch, very interesting:blue thumb:

Oh, I remember it well, my last year in school doing my 'O' levels in the Spring term. I 'unfortunately' had to go to school as I lived a five minute walk away ... well, it was if it was not snowing ... I think it took slightly longer at that time! I was 4'8" tall at the time and I am sure it came up to my knees! :heehee:
