Good "cheap" source of bare root fruit trees...

Hi guys and girls,

Been a while since I have posted - been busy in the house.

Now that is done im looking into prepping the garden for the coming spring. Part of the garden plans involve a small orchard.

Can anyone recommend a great source of cheap bare root stock fruit trees. When I lived in lincoln I got some fantastic apples, cherrys and pears from lidl of all places for £5 each but I have no idea when or if they will stock them again.

What tends to be the "stocking" season for these types of things?...

Any info would be a great help.

Aldi normally have them in the 2nd week of February.

 

Yes, I would say that any time in the next month or so would be the time they are stocked. Worth noting (if you don't know already)that fruit trees can have various root-stock, so it's worth checking to make sure you get the root-stock that suits your needs.

I just bought some cheap bare root trees on Ebay - seller directplants from Norfolk.

Might be worth having a look when it warms up a bit - the trees I got where nice ones.

 

Those prices look good, but in some cases the P&P on top pushes the price up to being comparable with our local (expensive) branch of Strikes.

I'll have a good look through their list later I think. If they can do a discount on P&P if you order multiple items, then it would be a very good deal I think.

 

The p&p is £12.50 maximum.

 

I saw some yesterday in B&M's don't no if you have one locally but they had apples pears cherries and plumbs for £3.99 each!! I'm going to try a few my self for that price

 

Cheers for the heads up everybody...I have actually been looking at the very same ebay seller. I think we have a b&m shop in norwich city centre so I'll take a gander when im next in. Got a fair bit of groundwork to sort out first anyway...cheers!!!

 

I've placed an order with direct plants, just awaiting delivery now. I am particularly impressed with this update I have just received from them.

The trees are going to be there, producing fruit, for 20 years or more ... just a thought to buy quality, and not only cheapness

 

I saw some fruit trees in Poundland the other day. Definitely an apple tree there. Not sure what else, or what price.

Not sure if Thompson and Morgan count as being quality. But you get to choose your rootstock, which is good. If you get Tesco Clubcard vouchers, you could always use their rewards site to exchange £5 of voucher for £15 to spend in T&M. I did this for one of my Xmas pressies. I managed to get a 20% off fruit trees code, and got a £32 patio apple tree down to £26, and 20 Charlotte seed potatoes for £3, all he had to pay was £5 postage and convert £10 in vouchers for the rest. So £15 spent all in for a very nice named tree with the rootstock I wanted.
