The farm that we buy our tatties and eggs from, and sometimes bits of veg, sells carrots.

Its £1 for a good sized bag of good carrots.

£2.50 will buy you a whole sack of 'carrots for horses'. They are net sacks, so you can see the quality of the carrots. Some are split, many are too big, too small, too crooked etc for display, but other than that they look absolutely fine to me.

Call me a cheapskate, but I keep being tempted to buy a sack, then bring them home, chop them up and and boil them for a few minutes then freeze them up. Or use them up in cottage pies which I can make in bulk and then freeze.

Am I right in thinking that all that's wrong with these 'carrots for horses' is that they are what the EU labels as 'Class 2', ie perfectly fine to eat, but just not plastic looking?

No i've done that, girt sack from Country Wide stores for £3. Nothing wrong with them, just won't keep very long unless you've got damp sand to store them in.

Bought a fantastic toy duck there too:dancy:

Its decided then. Next time I go up, I'm going to buy a sack.

Every time I go up, I have to fight an urge to ask for a job. I always seem to have banter with farmers. At the farm shop they always seem impressed that I, a customer, probably a towny, am strong enough to put a 55lb sack of spuds on my shoulder and carry it to the car. Lads 30+ years my senior, they always ask things like 'are you sure you can manage that'?

Outdoor life, sense of humour, whats not to be envious of:)

:snork: The farmer down the road must be 85. He said the same to me about the sack of tiddies:snork:

Lets face it, we'd all rather be farmers than carry on till death doing something we don't want to do.

The only thing i would bear in mind is that, because they were destined for animal feed they would have been treated as such ie in the way they are stored and transported etc :hate-shocked: ., know lots of people that do it.
Differant rules apply to animal feed chain to the human food chain
Wash them well and mean well

                      "Carrots for horses" ?

That's why some of those burgers were tinted orange.
