Anyone got any recomends yet, after last years fiasco of
Verve rough and included a bicylce pump and head lamp decomposed
Lidls turned out the best overal for that year but still poor
Morrisons was excellent until May when it became the Verve equivalent
Asda and BnQ same as verve
    Wickes very poor last year

So anyone got any good stuff this year

Jack, you get what you pay for.
Buy cheap stuff and expect crap, I've never come across anything too bad in compost.
But then I've never bought it from Morrisons, Wickes, Tescos, Lidl, or Asda or B &Q.

Only stuff I've ever had a complaint about was Tunstall JI, which was more like wet coal dust, rather than something to grow plants in.

Try and source spent mushroom compost. Cheers, Tony.

Great stuff if you can buy it locally and avoid postage costs. Last time I used it to plant up greenhouse tomatos I ended up with a bonus crop of mushrooms and I also got a few popping up outside too.

Hi Jack, Im not sure if youll get this, I am not that good on laptop. I have found an excellent compost called Humax. I bought durstons seed and multi compost and it has either killed all my seedlings or my plants have not rooted, they ust fall out of the pot when repotting and there is nothing round the roots. I did write to this company explaining explaining and they havent even bothered to reply.

My local recycling centre is giving the stuff away! Soil conditioner rather than potting compost, though. You just have to turn up and be prepared to shovel it into whatever containers you have. I've been five times for a bootful each time. Great for the shrub borders on my clay soil.

Humax multipurpose was the Biz! Unfortunately our wholesalers no longer stock this. Last year we had to use Westland, it's wasn't the best but it was what was on offer. This year, their 2013 mix is vastly improved and we're selling down at our Trading Hut it like it's going out of fashion. A much improved mix, with reduced peat, added lightweight wood which makes it even better for bulk sales.

I found my Verve Multi Purpose to be fantastic, maybe the odd bit of rag in the odd sack but nothing major, growth results were excellent. Next year I'm changing over to peat free ( as draining rare habbitats just so I can enjoy my garden is a little excessive) but as a product I couldn't fault it

I also use Humax from my allotment shop, find it to be very good, also Clover. I find the allotment shop sources and sells good quality stuff and cheaper than the 'garden centre' that are more like department stores these days!
