 I have no problem eating horse meat,I have proberbly backed most of them at the bookies.
I have eaten Kangaroo,Wild Bore,Ostrich,Rabbit and Octopus........but I supose the difference is I KNEW what I was eating.
Food IS sometimes contaminated that is why food poisening is NOT uncommon.

I'm really surprised nobody has yet said they would not eat horse meat.
Lets look at it from another view, the horses were probably old or surpless to requirements somewhere out in Romania.
They go the the knackers yard, then end up being sold as edible food.
Bear in mind this is happening in the good old EU, with all the regs they impose.

If it said Findus Horse Burgers on the packet, would you buy them?

If not, then you have a problem with eating horses, bit like eating dogs and cats.
Its not what we do, I dont understand it, but we just dont do it.

Pete, I would buy Findus horse burgers yes. Honestly yes.

I just ate a shepherds pie, so you never know what was in that.

I've ate things alot more 'strange' that a horse before! :snork:

Our local butcher in Westfield was awarded Runner up for the "Best Butcher in Sussex 2012". Final was last month.
When a customer in front of me jokingly asked for horse meat yesterday, the butcher replied "completely sold out - been a run on it this morning Sir."

I wonder if the supermarkets would be queueing up to sell it though.

Probably not, the demand wouldn't be there. That said most supermarkets do a trial on a food type. But unless it was popular, we can't say for sure.. but it's unlikely.

Unlikely. Prime cuts of lamb aren't going to be wasted on shepherds pie. Have you seen the price of lamb these days? No, no lamb in shepherds pie. Just shepherds.

Taking aside the legalities of stating a product is one thing when it isn't; taking aside the bute argument; there has to be concerns here about where the supply of horses is coming from. It is reasonable to assume that they were never intended for human consumption, so, what were they intended for? :dunno:

I was reading somewhere of the ease in which it is possible to transport horses from England/Wales/Scotland/Ireland *without* a passport (the required documents for transferring animals) and the criminal fractions have been harnessing (no pun intended!) this opportunity to utilise horses for drug smuggling. Now, once those horses have served their purpose and "use-by date" - where better to "hide" these pieces of "evidence" then in the food chain? :dunno:

I just think this is a little big bigger in scope than merely smuggling a bit of horsemeat into the humble beef burger!

To be fair, most of the cheaper meat products are made from stuff that we wouldn't eat if we knew what it was - lips, bums, tails and all sorts probably - - but, we should at least be assured that it has all come from the same type of animal, and that we know what type of animal that is.

I am another that would eat horse burgers or even steaks if they were available- maybe not regularly, but I would at least try them. The thing is, I probably already have without knowing about it.

I suspect a few more Supermarkets are having palpitations at the moment. Not just the basics but those above the value ones,
