I've had the same thing clueless, at B&Q they doubled up an item. Only realised when I got home I'd been charged twice for just one thing. They wouldn't refund me at first until I worked out how much I'd spent at that store over the last year, then the manager relented. I don't always check receipts are right and never do so with the food shop, yes I'm a prime candidate to be ripped off.

I always check every item on a till receipt whilst still in the shop. It's very rarely wrong but some errors do occur.

What I do find, in supermarkets, is that it's definitely worth working out the different unit cost of products depending on size. It's a natural reaction to assume that a larger size is proportionately cheaper. Whereas, it can quite often be a lot more expensive.

Being the stroppy B that I am, if the shelf tickets aren't unit priced, I complain to the manager and insist that either the larger or smaller item is removed from the shelf until they are unit priced. The local managers know me and know that I will immediately contact Trading Standards and the local media as I accuse them of deliberately misleading the public :old: :heehee:.

To be fair to the store managers, they are only stocking what the company sends them. If the products are unit priced I don't complain as it's 'caveat emptor' (let the buyer beware.) and it's easy to check. The usual reason these discrepancies happen can be a number of things. One of the sizes may have come into the store at a different time and after the price had changed or the companies produce at least three different sizes and not all of the sizes are supposed to go into the same store (the higher unit priced size should only be destined for their stores in posh areas - this does happen).

That is why consumer champions are trying to get a law passed that forces the stores to unit price everything in the same units.

Going back to the original topic. No, I wouldn't eat horsemeat. The cheapness of these suspect ready meals is not really an excuse for buying them as it is easy to produce home cooked meals at, or below, that price (I costed our meals last week and put the end result on another thread) :blue thumb: .

You will find there is tolerances in most food

There's a 2% for add mix tolerance in wheat which will go for bread, but this is for combineable crops, so you can have a load of wheat with 2% add mix of barley, oats, rape etc, not so you can but 2% sand in to make up the weight etc :mute:

They've probably gone to landfill. I bet the hungry nations of the world would be impressed by that.

So is there any testing of vegetarian products going on? Bearing in mind Sainsbury's first quorn pie, clearly labled "Suitable for Vegetarians" Contained Beef extract:mad:

I read the other day that EU regs only require pulverised/powdered horse skins (and some other bits of horses) to be labelled as 'seasoning' if added to meat products, so meat eaters might be getting something other than the herbs/garlic powder/etc. that phrase might lead them to expect.

Perhaps you should have given them a test-tickle to be sure? ;)

I do wonder where this is all going to end, or where the sources will end up being - here in the UK or a neighbouring country.
