    Many of the others have an unfair advantage over us lowly folks FC who just rely on good old Mother Nature,

        Must admit that I don't loli - don't really have the space to do so to be honest. Temperature in the room rarely drops below 17 overnight, which I hope will be enough to counteract the slightly colder temps that will be next to the window.

            I can but try :)

            To be honest, I am less bothered by the onions than I am about some of the other stuff I plan on doing - my tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, leeks, spring onions, lettuce, carrots, beetroot etc are more of an interest to me (probably wrongly) simply because I am unsure that there will be that much of a taste difference between my own onions and shop bought which are also abundant (I usually buy a 5kg sack at a time);

            Freddy, no thanks as I have nowhere to plant them. I am merely addressing the issue of level playing fields...:stirpot:

                So, you would de-value the eventual winner?

                I'm not in this Freddy, neither do I set the rules or judge the results.
                Sorry, it wasn't my intention to upset you,

                  I think Jenny has a point. Not all of us have a thermostatically controlled propagator nor a set of grow lamps nor a greenhouse. I'm not suggesting we do anything about this situation, we can't have a handicap system, far too complicated. Anyway it wouldn't surprise me if 'normally' grown onions out-performed mine grown under grow-lamps. Plants have a great habit of catching up and responding better to a bit of green-fingered tlc :dbgrtmb:

                        I can forget the advantage of south facing windows as I don't even have window cills (sash windows), I have a greenhouse, other people have bigger greenhouses, not all those with greenhouses have heating, I have polytunnels, other people have bigger polytunnels, etc.

                        Where do you stop?
