2013 Tomato Growing

Last year I grew:.....

Sungold
Sungold Select II
Elegance
Striped German
Brandywine (Sudduth)
Also, I grew from saved seed 2 varieties of shop bought tomatoes

Maybe a fluke (given the peculiar year weatherwise) but one of those shop varieties produced a very pleasant tasting tomato which I saved seed from - and to keep decisions as simple as possible - that is probably all I am going to grow this year.

 

I was accused of that!

 

Oughtn't it to have something like "Hercules" in its name?

 

bah humbug! ooops, wrong time of year.......

Damn it, I've excluded myself from the biggest tomato competition on the grounds I grew the "biggest" red balloon last year!

Following the obvious liking for Gardeners Delight, I've decided to try them. Where they are going, I don't have a clue!

 

I'm afraid I buck the trend as I tend to mainly use seeds I have collected myself!

I am not a great lover of cherry varieties but my grand kids do so I grow Gardeners Delight for them.

Because they can be grown outdoors and ripen very quickly, I put a couple of plants in a bucket every year and let them grow them in their own gardens, and I grow two or three plants in my greenhouse as back up for them.

As I mentioned I save my own seed, and for convenience I give them a name befitting where I got them e.g. About fifteen years ago I brought a tomato back from Feurtaventura so I have named this variety "Feurta"

Similarly I went to a tomato tasting at Tatton Park show and saved a few seeds of one I liked and naed it Tatton.

Other varieties I grow are Richard's, Josie's & Keith's and these samples from friends.

I also have a variety that was bred for M & S where the seeds are not available to the general public!

My principle reason for doing this is;

a) it is a challenge and

b) I grow varieties that suit my personal tastes!

If I am growing commercial tomato seeds I tend to grow the old varieties such as; Alicante,Ailsa Craig and Moneymaker as I feel some of the newer ones are often rather bland in taste!
