Just out of interest, can someone tell me what the qualities are of Gardeners Delight?

I can't imagine anything tasting better than Sungold:)

Freddy, I've found Gardeners Delight is a very good all-rounder. It's been pretty trouble free over the years (except last year when blight got it along with all my other toms). It's been the earliest ripening and keeps on producing through to October. Every one in our family likes the taste of the cherry sized fruit.

My GD were and always are a good do'er,plently of fruit and tastey....but i must say last year the first time growing Beefmaster...i was suprised at just how delish it was for a big tommy.....i really ought to try growing a yellow tomato but (another one of my funny ways) toms should be red:rolleyespink: :dbgrtmb:

Strikingly different flavour; I like the flavour of both.

Different colour :heehee: (all joking apart it can be difficult to get kids to eat stuff that is "the wrong colour")

          Same size though :blue thumb:

No Freddy I do not have a propagator, I just plant the seeds, in platic drink cups,(stood in the free pot carriers that you get to take away from HomeBase) on the window cill
The cill is only One metre long, and faces North
Everything I do early has to be done there, only thing was I did not have room on the cill, for anything else
Leggy was not a problem last year, As I just planted them six inches deeper,in the greenhouse

(I do not know the cost of running a propagator)

Apart from buying it ... small-ish ones are about 40 Watts which is about 1 kWh per day, so assuming 18p per kWh Unit then that is 18p per day, or £5.50 a month.

I agree, running costs are fairly low. The only thing is that it would, imo, need to be sited in a bright spot, unless you were to consider lighting. I have mine in my greenhouse. This obviously means that a power supply is needed, more cost, but for me I considered this to be an investment.

I have a pair of propagators designed (long / narrow) to fit a windowsill. That gives me added benefit of indoor temperatures but light is a problem and I move the seed trays to the light once they have germinated (either artificial indoors still, in early season of conservatory a bit later on once that is warm enough)

My propagating box is heated by a 60 watt mat which only seems to cut in occasionally once the box has heated up. The running cost is barely noticeable.

I am restricted to a one meter wide window cill, six inches wide, and a cold greenhouse
                      No Conservatory here :-(
So I will just do my late start and hope the summer lasts a little longer than last year

                      Hiya Jack.

You wouldn't consider having power to your greenhouse?

Freddy, it would be, either dangerous DIY or unafordable, cable down the back fence
I only grow as a hobby, for excellent taste over and above Supermarket rubbish, for two of us
The something to do in retirement is good, cost wise, I can buy off local growers, who sell their excess, only that would leave me needing something to do

The self sufficency I would not do, ie:- create sauces and store,as although we do eat lots of spag bols etc it would be a storage problem too
