I had a really nice terracotta container out the front by the door, with a nice little conifer in it and some spring bulbs that have just started to bloom.

Some thieving weasels have nicked it. As if its not bad enough that its nicked, they clearly didn't even want it. They nicked it just because they could. Wife found it smashed up in the church grounds next door. The conifer is gone, but the bulbs were still there, so I've saved them.

I'm not naive enough to be surprised it got nicked. I know these things happen. Its still annoying though, and what makes it even more annoying is that they did it just for the hell of it. I'd have taken some consolation from the thought that it was brightening up another part of town but no, its smashed on the floor, with the plants just left there to dry out and die.

Words alone cannot describe the contempt I feel for people like that, sheer vandalism.
I know I was no angel when growing up, but we had respect for other peoples property. We would never have dreamt of going onto someones property, even to fetch a ball back without permission.

Bad luck Dave , it is very irritating , but never get annoyed - do not give the low life's the pleasure of that.
If you look at the lovely planters , with some very expensive plants in them , at the front of houses these days , these must be very tempting for the scum-bag members of our community . There are secure glue on chain devices to protect these - which I can't locate on Google - anyone ?

I suppose you could screw the new one to the step...masonry drill etc large internal washer.
This sort of thing happens more and more stealing is a way of life for some.

I knew there was a risk when I did it about 3 months ago, and was pleasantly surprised it lasted as long as it did. I don't know if I'll bother replacing it though.

The more I think about it, the more I suspect that the original intention wasn't simple vandalism but they were actually stealing it for use elsewhere (or sale). The reason I think that is they got quite a few yards with it before smashing it. They could have smashed it where it was. I deliberately made it heavy in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of theft, by filling it most of the way with heavy clay soil rather than nice light compost. I suspect the thieving weasels, who clearly need to address their obvious lack of physical strength, simply ran out of energy after carrying it for a few yards.

When wife told me where she's seen it and I went and had a look to see what could be salvaged, I briefly considered cleaning up the mess. After all, it was my stuff. But then I thought no, I'll leave it. I want as many people as possible to see it (and lots of people will have, as it was clearly visible just walking past). Someone will know who did it. By leaving it there for all to see, I'm hoping that someone suffers the embarrassment of realising that it was probably their son or daughter that did it

It saddens me so much to read all this Clue. I can only draw comfort from the fact that we on GC all know it is wrong to do such things. What sick, hollow lives some people lead. The pleasure they derived from what they did will be so short lived,

Absolute scum Dave, it happens everywhere. I'm tempting fate myself with having the planters I made up out front, but I'm not going to bring them round the back cos some thieving low life might take them. I was just talking to a neighbour 5 mins ago who I noticed put up a security ligh on his garage. He was only testing it to see if it works. It contains a CCTV within and he's putting it in his car park in Chester to stop any vandalism etc.... But I'm thinking of getting on myself just for security.

When I put up my hanging basket brackets, I deliberately put them higher than usual as to stop anyone helping them selves to the baskets. I have to get on a step ladder just to water them they're that high! The area we've moved to is a nice area, but there are thieves everywhere!

So sorry to hear that, cl1.

Mind you, I do have a confession to make. I, too, have been a garden thief!

Growing up, the neighbours at #8 were pulling up their old wallflowers. My brother and I (aged 7&6 respectively) asked what they were going to do with them? When they said they were putting them in the bin, my brother asked if we could have them. Bemused, they said we could. My brother said to me that we would give them to our mother to cheer her up (our father had died in the January). So, off we trot with our half dead offerings, presented them to our mother and, even at that age, we could see she was deeply moved.

Few days later, I was out on my own and and saw Mr H, on his knees, pulling up something from his garden. But, he took them round his back :dunno: I waited, and waited, but he didn't come back out again. In my 6yo brain, him being an "old" man - well, anything could have happened to him! - and, worse, that bit of garden was still full of "things" which probably needed to be pulled out.

So, what was a 6yo girl to do? :th scifD36: Being helpful, I pulled up each and every "thing" in his front garden plot and dutifully took them home to my mother (like my brother did! :) ). Even at that age, I could see she was deeply moved. So moved that she couldn't bear to put them in a vase, like she had with the other flowers. So, so moved, each time Mr H walked past our door, she would scurry inside!

Those "things", were all Mr H's new bedding plants
Mr H, had sat by his lounge window (having put the weeds on his compost bin!) and watched me pull up each and every one
Mr H was a wise "old" man and had guessed what my brother and I had wanted the wallflowers for (albeit half dead) :old:
My mother was so mortified when I'd presented her with a flush of fresh bedding plants, she'd binned them and hid from Mr H.
Mr & Mrs H became firm family friends and all three of them thoroughly enjoyed laughing over the whole thing when I was old enough to understand :heehee:
