Joolz , funny old game gardening , I had the opposite experience to Sal . I grew my first Canna ,Tropicanna Red in 2011 , germination was 5-8 days and they flowered well in the first year , and very well last year . I'll be potting up the rhizomes soon for the third year - I hope saying this is not giving them the kiss off death !

Just to butt in, but, Surely the "tropical" bit is just a name for a series of hybrids.
Arn't all Cannas basically tropical plants?

I know some flower more freely than others, but that is probably when growing species plants that require longer growing seasons.

Canna seed was always described as "erratic" for germination.:)

I'm now just waiting on 3 out of 33 seeds sown just over a week ago for a full house; the largest seedling is now 3-4 inches tall!! - amazing growth and thats not even on the propagator base now; its been moved to a warm and light windowsill..:)

I really am bemused as to why you are struggling with germination Mowgley and Joolz :dunno: (other than it being different varieties?), but I suppose that's all the fun of gardening even though it can be frustrating sometimes, I hope things improve for you both :dbgrtmb:

When I sow cannas, I chip them then pop into some warm water for about 48hrs. I then put about 12 seeds into a plastic tub, normally the Chinese take away ones with some moist compost.Put the lid on and then pop in the airing cupboard.Normally takes about a week or earlier for them to come up and I get 100% germination:) I have some in soak atm and will pop in compost tomorrow.

The series is known as 'Tropic' and I have grown them for a few years (for work) and they always flowered in their first year The flower beds would have looked a bit green if they hadn't. After germinating they were grown on at a min of 13c.

Viability of the particular batch may be low perhaps?

Most Canna seeds I have grown have had very high germination percentages ... but some have had very low, almost zero, germination. I do the same thing for all of them, so only a slim chance it was me, rather than the seed, I reckon.
