Bucket list, what's in yours?

I'm with jack mostly. I've done more than I could of possibly imagined when I was younger. Having a lovely wife and 2 adorable little lads has tip topped my happiness. Material things are just material, no depth nor substance, and no matter what, material "things" are not life changing like healthy happy kids in a happy home. I've never been so knackered,in my life, but a good sort of knackeredness if you know what I mean! Don't get me wrong, our 3 1/2 year old can be a little booger at times, and certainly tests our patience, but I see my stubborn and frustrated character in him. I just laugh, but mrs al goes spare sometimes............... She's even worse with him! ;-D

 

#1. See the hanging gardens of Babylon.

This would have to involve the Time Travelling Helicopter, as they don't exist anymore.

#2. Visit Masada, and eat some fresh Dates there & try to picture what it was like before the Roman siege.

One of the best things i've done so far was to wake up at the top of a Roman Ampitheather in Turkey.

The heat of the sun woke me up, and the sight of the sunrise over the mountains moved me to tears.

 

Three things I'd recommend:

See Saturn's rings through an amateur telescope. Decent-ish telescope will do, doesn't need to be Jodrell Bank! but dark (rural) skies would definitely be preferable to city ones ...

See a total eclipse of the Sun (total, 99% totality won't do )

Go on a safari in the plains of the Serengeti Take Attenborough with you if you like! but brilliant as his telly programs are, the real thing is truly awesome.

I've not been to Acapulco, but when I asked my wife's grandmother "What's the best thing you ever did" that's what she said. I then asked her "Is there anything you regret not doing" she said "Yes, I regret not going to Acapulco a second time" ... so it may be worth a visit

 

Bah thought this was a thread about morrison's flower buckets!
But I have always wanted to see the rose red city of Petra, and booked it yesterday
Always wanted a holiday with the grown up kids before grand kids came along, on a sunny Greek island, like we used to when they were little, and hopefully that will happen this year

I grew some Acapulco Dahlias last year, does that count?!!

 

I've been to Acapulco and would have thought once was plenty. Wonder what she got up to there?

 

One of the things I've always wanted to do is ride my pushbike across Spain. For a longer trip, I thought maybe Santander or Bilbao to the med coast. For a shorter ride I thought come down out of the Pyrenees to the med coast, but I'd have to push aside my fear of heights for that. I've been on that road in a coach, and I seem to remember there were a few tight bends with sheer drops of several hundred feet to the side.

 

OK, I'll scratch that from the list. Zigs: we'll have to meet behind the bike sheds instead!

She went on a world cruise with her Hubby when they retired, big adventure I should imagine ... so maybe that was the attraction, or maybe, given it was 40 or more years ago, Acapulco was the place to be and been seen in back then?!!

 

One thing I would REALLY like to do is go to Hawaii and see Kilauea volcano erupting. I would like to hike as close as possible, watch the lava fountains at night and take a helicopter ride to see the lava going into the sea. I think that would make a very memorable and interesting trip!!

I was there too, that was a definite tick on my 'bucket list', a truly awe inspiring experience.
Now I want to see another one, (hopefully without the clouds next time).
North Western USA, August 2017 is the one I'm aiming for. Started saving up for it already.

I do have a couple of other slightly random things on my list.

To complete my 'quest' of trying to visit the highest point of every county in England. This is a long term goal, spread over many walking holidays and trips around the country, it's been going for over a decade now and I'm just about half way through.

To visit the WW1 war grave cemeteries in northern France, where my two great uncles are buried. I still have the old, faded black and white photos, passed down to me, of these two fresh faced young men, standing proud in their army uniforms.
I would like, one day, to pay my respects. It's the least I can do.

 

Sort of. It was overcast in Cornwall? ... we timed a holiday in France with Totality and saw it, in bright sunshine (well, until the Moon came over!) in the middle of the French countryside. Got all the documented effects in one sitting, very lucky

 

The 1999 eclipse, I remember it well. We'd booked a week on a campsite in Newquay, as it was supposed to be a good vantage point. The invoice came back, and I noticed that it was pretty much double what I'd expected (we'd stayed there before). I then noticed a charge for 'Eclipse Week'. I promptly cancelled my reservation. I must admit it made me chuckle when the big day came, and it was totally overcast in Cornwall.

Ahh, what's on my list...well not much, but I DO have this ambition to cycle from John O'Groats to Land's End. Hmm, one has to pay to visit Land's End. Ah well, I guess I'll just have to pay

 

Actually Freddie if you had gone to Newquay despite the price you would have seen the best views of the Eclipse as we were camping down in St Ives because it was reckoned to be the longest totality{6mins 6 secs}but where we were it started raining that morning and Mr Kandy refused to drive up to Newquay so we stood in a field with loads of others to 'experience' it.

We had set up our old black and white portable TV and watched it on there as it was being filmed from a Hurcules and ended up with almost all the campsite squashed in to our awning to watch it What got us was the fact that at the start the continual rain that had started that morning simply stopped as if someone had switched off the rain tap and it was dry throughout the time of the eclipse starting and stopping,but as soon as the event was over the rain started up again as if the rain tap had been turned back on All the cows in the fields started mooing and we heard birds singing as if it was a dawn chorus. When the eclipse was on loads of people stood on the hills and we could see flash guns going off and we had a shadow pass over the hills.

Yes we had to book the campsite twelve months in advance but don't remember the prices going up,but the campsite did run out of water for a few days and the toilets got blocked {due to lack of water}but it one experience i am glad we witnessed although we would still like to see a full eclipse sometime before we snuff it

One thing that was on our bucket list which we have just done was to pay our mortgage off which we did through overpayments and two weeks ago we finally got our wish and our home is now ours 3 years and 3 months early and we have the deeds come this week to prove it

We would just like to live long enough to pay our way in the world well in to old age before we kick said bucket and have reasonable health along the way.Neither of us are materalisitic or have the desire to conquer the world or die wealthy.As long as we have each other and good friends we have all we need
