    Will do :snork:

She knows what I am like though - when I have been 'naughty' on the net, it is either plants, seeds, something car related, or maybe a new electronic gizmo; I don't do the 'other' kind of naughty.

    Worth a mention.

Lettuces like a good fertile soil, and don't let them want for water. A sure sign imo that they aren't happy, is when you get an 'open' habit, ie:- no heart. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it won't be as tender as it could be.

I've had four lettuces over-wintering in a window box - had some spare seedlings so I thought I'd give it a go.

Think they are going straight to seed as soon as the temperatures begin to rise!

I find they don't like the heat, so I sow a few every fortnight, for succession, but don't expect much during the heat of Summer.

Would a shady location be better for the height of summer?

It wouldn't hurt, imo. But not dark...

You're in for a shock then.

Although maybe not this year / decade ... :)

Whilst we are on the subject, too early to sow? Was thinking that I could start them off in the greenhouse, then plant them out under a cloche..

I do that. My "schedule" is to start 01-March. I also sow a few plastic windowbox thingies that can live in the greenhouse until warmer; but they are cut-and-come-again type, rather than Butterhead etc.

          My seeds have arrived :dancy:

The lemon chilli seeds state that they are slow to germinate and quite a warm soil, so they are a definite to sow early and indoors. I don't have a propagator, so I will just have to hope that the heat of the house will be enough.

I am going to get some of the endive seeds going sooner rather than later too, and hopefully they will give me some early salad before I start the other seeds off. :)
