Finished constructing raised beds. Need to back fill at the front of the boards , put the gravel paths a back in and empty the contents of the compost heap so I can move it at the weekend to make way for a chicken run.

Digging up the last of my parsnips.

Sorting out sheets of black polythene dpm sheet to cover the ground (that has been drying out nicely) before the rain comes later in the week, so it will continue warming up and stay relatively dry underneath ready for early seed sowing/module planting.

 

Started pouring bleach on my patio to kill off the algae, it is working a treat

Trying to remove a possibly 20/30 year old, Viburnum Opulus in a limited space.
It seems to have a trunk going below ground level about 10" across, bit of a nightmare.

I was going to ask a question about moss removal ( it is VERY bad) as I don't want to use Iron Sulphate as when scarified, bit of moss will be left on the lawn and the nesting season is about to start and some birds will be using moss, this could be toxic to them.
Does anyone know of a non chemical or 'safe' chemical to use.

 

I used bleach to clean my decking, it worked a treat too!

 

I use it on the concreted rear courtyard area - comes up like new too.

I don't think there is a safe chemical Strongy. I have an electric scarifier but even that doesn't do a complete job. I will use chemicals in combination with the machine this year.

Sounds genuine, not a hard sell by the sounds of it (or you didn't let him?!!!)

I wonder if the Sulphate part will acidify the ground, which could upset the Bee Orchids?

I think hes right about the open day, it takes a while to recover the bald patches. However, some Nitrogen to get the lawn cracking in the spring normally takes care of that, and you could over-seed if you felt you really wanted to (striving for the Bowling Green finish, for example )

 

Just look at the moss!!!

I started work on my second bed in six months today. Finished it will be about 17ft long by 8ft wide and I'll round off the ends at some point too. It's a killer on my back getting the turf off (if you can call it turf). The moss in the lawn I will have to tackle, there's hardly a blade of grass to be seen now.

Oh join the club, my "short meadow" is choked with moss, oh well I suppose less to mow. Maybe if by some miracle we have a good summer things might improve a bit although if it is dry the moss then turns brown! Off for a very hot bath as have been tackling a neglected Beech hedge. After 3 days of petrol hedge cutter and loppers it's sort of done and have had a constant bonfire getting rid of the cuttings. I know I should have shredded the cuttings BUT there was so much I just wanted rid. I hurt everywhere.

I think I will just (hand!) scarify for now and as you suggest Shiney and kill it later in the year, it will take till then to scarify it anyway!
