While talking about water loving cannas,is it just canna grown from seed? ive just read that water can rot a rhizome :dunno:so would they have to grown from seed every yr ?
and then 2nd yr plant the rhizomes in a bog area?:dunno:or would that rot them aswell?
    sorry too many questions

        Hello chums:)

What kind of minimum night temperatures are we looking for? At the moment, I'm getting around 10c or more. Is that ok?

Plants? Should be fine. That's all I aim to keep my conservatory at during the "plant raising" season, and we aren't there yet so its currently getting down to 6C some nights. My starting-off-Cannas are in Garage which is a bit warmer, but will need to move to conservatory once they need light. Had several in conservatory last year because they were bought in the Autumn,a nd I thought too small to over-Winter "stored", and they continued to grow during the Winter no problem (frost free during the rump of the Winter, but touching zero on one night, and 4C - 6C on plenty of nights)

Seed germinating? I reckon that's a bit low.

If they are germinated I reckon they'll be fine. Bit warmer would help - bring them into the house for the nights if not too much faff ?

Hi Freddy, I germinate my seed at around 25-28 degrees and then once they are around an inch high I move them on to a light warm windowsill that has a radiator below it that is on for 2 hours in the morning and evening, the average temperature in the windowsill I'm guessing is around 18-20 degrees, but it does get warmer when the sun is on it and probably down to around 15 degrees at night at a guess. Every seedling I've had on it, whether Cannas or other have thrived there and its no different now, this years sedlings are growing strongly.

In answer to your question I would say 10 degrees is a little low for seedlings, but as long as they're getting more warmth through the day they should be ok and I wouldn't worry too much :dbgrtmb:

          Hiya Kristen.

At the moment, they are in the heated propagator, in the greenhouse, under lighting. As you may be aware, I also have my 'monster' onions in there too, and to try to avoid 'leggy-ness', I'm trying to hold them back a bit, with regards to temperatures. It's a bit of a balancing act...

Well, I had an hour cleaning out the greenhouse today and checked over the several pots of cannas I had left in situ, letting them naturally dry out and I wrapped the pots in bubblewrap and fleece and packed some straw in the top of the pots.

After cutting back the remaining growth from last year I carefully scraped back some of the compost and found nice firm, fat rhizomes and some immature new shoots in every pot (8 in total, 5 varities), so no losses this winter as long as they all start in to growth this spring :dancy: :)
