Sticky Post Ideas for Beginner's Gardener thread

Hi Everyone,

Apologies if this already exists somewhere in the forum, in this case I am struggling to find.

Can I please make a suggestion? I would really love to see some sticky post on various subjects for beginners. When I say I am a complete beginner, that usually means I have a back or front garden - where to start? What tools do I need? What brands are good? Gloves perhaps, apron, wellies, etc...

Now, I understand people like different brands for tools, but I would really appreciate if I saw an article named "Tools" which would tell - for hand tools you need this and that, brands are such and such, and below is a link to a poll which brands are used and recommended by GC users. average price is £xx.

if you have a lawn get this and that, if roses - smth else.

Some other ideas on sticky posts:
1. Lawns, how to prepare ground
2. Designing your garden - how to zone it, add features, gardens beds (what are those).


This will help avoid a million of posts on subject "I am beginner. Where to start"? Most of beginners mean the same options - which tools to buy, lawn and a couple of flowers here and there.

Trouble with adding several sticky posts is that they then fill up the whole of the first page ...

My solution to that would be to have a single Sticky called "Interesting Topics" or somesuch that acted as an index with links to worthy threads ... but I've proposed it before and it hasn't got any traction.

The Search function is pretty good, or just ask a question - folk here who remember a suitable thread will be able to find it and give you a link, or an answer to your question. If the search doesn't get you what you want its worth trying a "restricted" search using Google by typing in the search thus:

site:gardenerscorner.co.uk Keyword1 Keyword2 etc.

I don't know that I agree with "most beginners mean the same options ... "; when I began, I wasn't interested in which tools or what to do with my lawn (you just mow it, right? )

While I do agree that would be of interest to some gardeners, you only need to look at the range of topics covered to get an idea of the diverse range of interests of many of GC members (from Beginners, Trees, Tropics, Edibles, Polytunnels, etc., etc.,).

The "I'm a beginner, where to start ... " is actually more complex than it first appears and has many variables:-

~ "where" located (we have international members)?
~ which soil type?
~ which aspect does the garden favour?
~ which "type" of gardening interests the poster?
~ how much time would the member commit to gardening?
~ what does the garden currently look like? (Manicured? Overgrown? Mud bath? Mature? Builders newbie?)
~ what is the garden to be used for? (Children? Chickens? Dogs? Socialising? Relaxing? Hiding? Parties? Providing most of the fruit and veg to supplement the pantry?)

I'm not a huge fan of a forum which has a large amount of stickied threads/indexes; to me, a forum is a common meeting place for people with like minded interests and you "converse" via the forum. Too many stickies/indexes and it just becomes a web page and can deter the flow of conversation?

As a beginner to this forum, I spent a good amount of time using the search function to see what had been written on topics relevant to me and found it a very easy to use, incredibly good and very informative (it was also a good way to "get to know" members and to learn who is knowledgable in what )

I love the friendliness of GC and no one seems to mind if you ask a question which has been asked before - indeed, it's a lovely way for a 'beginner' to see how much knowledge and experience they have gained when they can answer another's beginner question
