The whole thing is deplorable and lays bare - as if we needed yet another reminder - the conniving, unscrupulous, cheap and nasty nature of the death "industry." The hypocrisy from "I-Know-My-rights" consumers, expressing disgust and disbelief, has been only marginally less crass than the sick jokes which slowly but surely started pouring out with morbid inevitability. Most vomit-wrenching of all was the indignant article - met with exasperated sympathy from a shocked and horrified colleague of mine - describing how Muslim and Jewish murderers, rapists, burglars and other prisoners might have been unknowingly consuming pork. The only thing that stops me laughing is sorrow for the poor, mutilated, unnaturally fattened-up, slaughtered pigs. Why was anyone surprised at any of this? It has been known for years that death products contain loads of slaughterhouse waste, such as lips, teeth, hair, brains, genitals and excrement (is no-one familiar with the term "turd burger"?)
I am astonished at some of the comments on this site, from certain participants I have always felt were highly intelligent, saying things like "the only thing they did wrong was not saying which animal it was" etc. This argument is totally self-defeating. The whole point of having laws about ingredients is to force such companies to declare the contents of their products. These people are liars - nothing more, nothing less, and I am surprised anyone would trust them ever again.
All this basically boils down to is that the consumer has been "had." Smarting with embarrassment, they looked for someone to blame and were able to point the finger at the ones they paid to stitch them up. Even those saying "What's the problem, let's all start eating horse" completely miss the point.

When a vast amount of people go shopping their priority is cost!! If they can get a dozen 'beef' burgers for £1 they are happy. Supermarkets constantly trying to out price one another, I honestly think that as long as it is edible and CHEAP people will buy it regardless of what is in it. People are struggling to make ends meet, Tesco shops are still full.
GC members come on here for a chat and a laugh, they don't want to get too 'political' or into a heavy argument, Ziggy won't let us!!!

          I must agree with Val.

Although what has happened is deplorable the reason I, and many others, stay on GC is that we consider it a site to be able to enjoy without too much vehemence coming into the discussion.

There are plenty of other sites for those discussions.

Some valid points Simon, but like the others say, we try not to get over exited about things on here, especially during the stir crazy, can't get out to garden period.

I've got some pretty strong views on the meat industry, but I vent my feelings on meat advertisments surveys:snork:

A recent one went something like,

Question : What did you not like about the advert you have just been shown?

Answer : Didn't like seeing slabs of dead animal being cut up, why do advertisers not think about the offence they cause to the countries 4 million vegetarians.

Mr Kandy thought it was an advert for holidaying in the Shetland Isles until we saw the end of it:snork: Evidently on Utube there are many different versions of the advert now but i like this one...

Well if no-one likes what I say they don't have to read it or reply. There were quite a lot of crass jokes about the subject and I was simply making use of free speech to redress the balance and point out the cruelty and violence behind the topic. I wasn't aware "political" discussions were discouraged in this non-gardening section of your website but now I am so I will keep my distance. I assume this discouragement also applies to recent discussions about the high speed rail link and one entitled "Nuclear War" with posts about ballistic missiles in North Korea.

                        Sorry Simon,

We didn't mean to discourage you, like I said, you've got some very valid points.

Just making sure it doesn't get too heated, like you say, free speech is good. I didn't censor your post at all. :dunno:

Not looked at the high speed rail thread, but I will now if you think its getting out of hand.

Please carry on posting, its an emotive subject and yes, as in any situation there will be bad jokes.

No need to do that Simon I think what you said was perfectly valid. I was a bit shocked that horse meat had found it's way onto our plates. I thought after the BSE scare that really strict rules were being enforced. We stopped eating beef after the BSE scare just in case and although we are now a bit more relaxed about it we never buy beefburgers or sausages.
