Spruce, they are a pain in the neck! I used bi-carbonate of soda in water as was suggested and it has worked on my house plants. But unfortunately all my trays of seeds are still indoors while it's cold and the gnats are lurking around those. They're contained though in my spare bedroom with the door shut! :)

The stick sounds a good idea especially for seed trays as I wouldn't use bi-carb on those. :dbgrtmb:

I've been using New Horizon peat free MP compost (from William Sinclair horticulture) for a couple of years now and apart from a few larger bits have found it quite good especially if mixed with some silver sand to help the drainage. I tried a bag of their seed and cuttings compost the other day for the first time and that was a very good consistency, with no lumps (and no peat).

For fungus gnats why not just give a very quick blast of fly killer? Always works for me :)

Loofah, fly killer does work for the gnats but it doesn't kill the larvae in the pots, so they continue to hatch. Bi-carb seems to be working for those. :)

That looks like the Verve compost I bought last year. The compost in shiny new bags being sold at my local B&Q is rubbish, so stock up before they ship the new stuff to your B&Q.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any more confusing with old/new formula 70/75 litre bags and guessing what's in them, when I went into Wickes today they had 70 litres bags in the foyer with a sign "4 for £10", but exactly the same stuff outside in the yard "4 for £15". I still haven't got to see what's in them, but I could feel what felt like wooden splinters through the bags.

Scrungee, one B&Q is the only large diy store we have on the island so it has a huge turnover in stock. I don't suppose for one minute the Verve I've just bought is from last years supply and they've just had a huge delivery of it.

Why don't you go back and ask them to open another bag for you, the one you saw may have been a bad one. :)

I bought a bag of Bowers General Purpose Compost to tide me over while I decided whether or not to buy B&Q's Peat added General Purpose Compost. I ran out of Bowers and today I bought 250 litres of B&Q's peat added compost. I've not had time to open a bag yet but I'll have a look tomorrow to see what it's like.:coffee:

It was better than the bag of B&Q peat free compost that I bought and which started off this thread, Jenny!!!:coffee: I didn't think Bowers compost was too bad, it was nice and crumbly with some hard bits in it, but what compost doesn't??:dunno: I'd buy more of it if they did it in bigger bags. It served it's purpose anyway.

Armandii, how does it compare to Verve and the cost to please?
