Last thing of an evening Mrs Scrungee takes the hens' scraps 'specially prepared treats' bowl from the run and leaves it upturned on the lawn overnight so when it's time to use it the following day there's always some extra treats for the hens hiding inside it and the other stuff gets tipped on top of them.

Yes slug pub :ccheers: works best for me or a torch at 11.00 pm freaking out next door:heehee:
We have all had bad times with slugs & snails this year.
My 3 new hosta I have grown on from plug plants " Jurassic Park" in 6inch pots on the highest shelf in the greenhouse (shaded in that part) have been half nibbled and I could see the slug trail right up the tomato stalk so they knew what they wanted !!!

They MUST be able to SMELL the plants! I've had plants up high too and they have been chomped while the stuff on the ground isn't. Just thinking about them winds me up!!!

Right! In that case we need a Slug Pub with an Island containing a sacrificial Hosta Leaf :)

Just wanted to mention, over in the Snails thread another member, Bem, and I have both been reporting success with sheep wool pellets as a deterrent.

Do dying/dead slugs smell? The reason I ask is that sometimes after laying down the special blue sweeties, the next morning there are hundreds of dead or dying slugs and snails, and an unpleasant smell. My missus can't smell it but I can. It may be because I'm an ex-smoker, so now I smell everything like its new, or it could be that I'm imagining it.

I went the slug pub route, emptying them into a drain soak away in the drive, then noticed an appalling smell, even lifted sewerage inspection lid, just inside back gate , realised it was from the slugs so emptied bag of soda crystals and a large bottle of bleach down drain, smell gone at the moment but I think it will need plenty of rain to move it through,
In future I will empty slugs into a bucket and walk round to field behind me and let the hedgehogs have them,

The first lot of dead ones I had to deal with I just wrapped in newspaper and stuck them in the bin, but then after a few days I noticed bin absolutely reeked and there were loads of flies attracted to it :eeew: . I have now taken to carefully wrapping them in newspaper and then putting that in a plastic bag. If it's more than two or three days from a bin collection when I need to dispose of them they either go in the dog waste bin (bit cheeky I know but I assume that all gets incinerated anyway) or a waste bin on one of the street corners on my way to work.

I've been getting far fewer adult slugs in the beer trap in the last few days then this morning a hedgehog came waddling along the patio! I was a bit concerned as it was about 7.30 am and I thought a bit late for a hedgehog to be out, but I was thrilled to see him and just hope he (or she) is enjoyng the slugs. Actualy I did find one and pick it up on a shovel to show to him, but he was just wandering around and I assume (hope) looking for somewhere to sleep.

I wonder if a hedgehog could get its snout into the beer trap because I actually chucked a big slug in the trap the other night, but when I emptied it in the morning it wasn't there!

Also, have to sadly report a breach of the sheep wool pellets, don't know how, maybe they dropped off a plant from above, but the swines have had the astrantia again.

Ruddy hell, this thread has me worried about my first time veggies this year...

                  :ouch1:

We had loads last year, I've developed a fairly robust dislike for them now.
