Is there a particular type of grass seed available that will grow well in a heavily shaded area?

I am looking for something that will thrive under the wee ones trampoline if possible - some light gets through, but not full sun.

I'm not looking for anything too refined as my garden has two grass areas, and not lawns - don't think I will ever have lawns until I am a lot longer in the tooth, and save my pennies to re-turf!

They do grass seed for shadey areas , but I think you would struggle growing grass under a trampoline. Would a nice chipped bark or a small pebble layer with some edging not be better ?

I bought a "shady grass mix" from the garden centre for an area under trees and it has grown really well (and was a bald-patch-mess before).

Given that it won't get any foot-fall under the trampoline (except when you shift the trampoline to cut the grass under it perhaps? or a dog lying on it?!!) then I think that should do well.

Dunno but you might be able to get a few turves of shady-mix perhaps?

I'm not sure. Trampoline presumably 3' off the deck? Perhaps 10' to 12' diameter? I think quite a lot of light would get under that - equivalent to an area under some trees, for example.

I never sowed shady-grass under our trampoline, but that was definitely bald!

Ideally, I want to move the trampoline onto the patio area of the garden, but that means moving the shed, and moving the shed will actually mean replacing it as its warped and bent out of shape, and that takes money that I don't have at the moment - maybe in a year or two.

Its a 15' diameter trampoline, which sits about 3-ft off the ground; it took the entire 'non' summer last year for the grass under it to get thin, and in fairness it was in pretty poor nick to begin with. Over winter, its been on the other side of the grass, and seems to have had no effect at all (not that the grass has really been growing much).

I will have a look and see if I can find a shady-mix at the garden centre, thanks :)

I think you are in with a chance with Shady Mix - I don't mean that you should buy Grass Seed off eBay from Shady Deals 'R' Us though :)

I'd be interested to know how it goes next Autumn pls.

May need some research, but the grassed areas in the far east Singapore/Hong Kong etc have a creeping grass that is as tough as old "Freeman, Hardy and Willis" specials :ideaIPB:

                Cheers, Tony.

Nice ideal honeybunny, but I rent this house and have to keep it as it is, if you know what I mean; besides that, my longer term plan is to move the shed, relocate the trampoline and then free up the grass area for the wee one and the dog to run around.
