I thought that the vital trick is to keep the crowns as dry as possible (correct me if I'm wrong)? Were they waterproof?

    That I can understand..................

I wrap mine up but keep the top open as such with leaves and the old fronds bent over as you need to keep it moist (the log) over winter

        Spruce,
        Interesting concept.
Did you just chop the top off the old one and put the new one on top?

(Appologies, this thread seems to have gone a bit off topic  )

dont worry the ebay bidding is over for the ones we where watching , I cut a V in the bottom old trunk (used a saw) and done a inverted V into the new one scattered swell gell crystals (dry) on the top of the V put them together and hammered short pieces of bamboo canes in plus at the back put a stake in to keep it from rocking in the wind and I have a sprinkler system and tat was switched on everday for 30 mins when it hadnt rained for a couple of days also sprayed the fronds and the trunks with seaweed extract and as you can see the roots romped away .

          Thanks!
I'm thinking of putting one next to the Trachy as a backdrop to a cacti and succulent (covered) bed.

It's good! One minute we're marvelling at the dedication of Galanthophiles - the next we're about to learn how to graft a DA!!!

              longk,
I have to admit, that if I have started a thread, I get annoyed if someone hijacks it, and it goes off topic :nonofinger:

Just had a look at the seller's ebay feedback, they have sold 15 of these at between £250 to £360 in the last 6 weeks, not a bad little earner.
