Where to buy from!

They all sound great, but I wanted an instant impact for the wildlife which come to our garden and for those who have kindly taken up residense.
This is why we ended u with such a specimen, and its now 40 yrs old with a hope of it lasting for many years after I have gone back to the earth.

I expect most people choose to buy 10 trees for £30 than one for £300 ... but its a long wait to get a decent sized tree from a 2M or 3M plant :(
I'd love to be able to afford some semi-mature trees, trouble is I have a large garden and am choosing to buy-cheap and have-more Just bought 170 Berberis (Purple ones) to make a "skirting board" around a Yew hedge I planted a few years ago. They are cell-grown, only 10cm high, I have potted them on into 9cm pots and hopefully they will move to 1L pots during the Summer; they may be big enough to plant out in the autumn, if not it will be pot-on to 2L pots for next year and then plant out next Autumn.

Its quite a lot of work to save some cash although I obviously enjoy it, otherwise I wouldn't do it.

The cell-grown ones that I bought were 45p each; Crocus.co.uk [not renound for "cheap" ] sell them for around £8 each in a 2L pot, burncoose.co.uk are £8 each for 3L in the sort of quantities I want ... that's over £1,250 saved I am really glad I did the sums but I have to wait a couple of years for the same result.

However, at the £30-a-plant bracket I think it is worth considering whether one might spend £45 on a 3M starter tree, rather than £30 on a 2M one.

 

Just an update for anybody interested: I bought three trees 8/10 bare root from Ashridge trees. Amelanchier 'Robin Hill, Sorbus hupehensis and a Sorbus wilmorinii.

All three arrived well packed and in good condition. They are all over 3 metres tall and have provided immediate impact which is what I wanted. (I'm just hoping they don't snap in high winds as I used low diagonal stakes at 45 degree angle!!)
Delivery charge was only £6 and I shall be tempted to use them again this autumn when I will be planting an orchard all being well.
