The end of the ice sheet used to run from Bristol to London. Its what pushed the Thames down to its present course, before the channel & the North sea were there, the Thames was a tributary of the Danube.

At the moment the effect of global warming on the Gulf Stream (and thus the UK climate) is a matter of conjecture. It's all dependant upon how much of the Actic Circle ice mass melts, and how quickly. I'm sure that stephenprudence will be along to explain it far better than me.

The globe in general is warming, but in this situation as LongK suggests above, historically, the NW European area cools. So technically there is global warming but not in the NW of Europe.. think of equilibirums in heat distribution, where a large area is warming, the cooling in a small area is rather intense. However the net cooling will probably be less than we might have expected 100 years ago.. but such cooling, in theory, will still be significant.

Climate change is more realistic term because the global climate become more extreme as it tries to create and restore that climatic equilibrium

I too remember the winter of 62 but not 47! In 62 I was living in North East London, built a snowman in the garden on Boxing Day and it was still there on 21 st March (my Mum's Birthday, hence why I remember).Where I now live the land around here was formed by glacial activity so afraid I'm not convinced that climate change is anything new. Bring back last March which was glorious.

My understanding re the Gulf Stream is that as the cool melt water heads south the point at which it meets the warmer waters coming up from the south may/will change? This is what affects the weather that we will experience.
