GATESHEAD FLOWER SHOW

Here's an extract from an article in the Amateur Gardening Magazine:

One of the North's premier gardening shows has been cancelled as a result of crippling Council budget cuts.
The Gateshead Summer Flower Show, a favourite for 23 years, was axed by cash strapped Gateshead Council. The Council is struggling to find 30 million pounds of savings between 2013 and 2015. A Gateshead spokesman said "We can confirm that the show will not be taking place in 2013. The decision was not taken lightly."
The Council's Service Director of Libaries, Sport and Culture, Ann Borthwick, hinted that the show had gone for good. Anne said "After careful consideration, we have decided that we will no longer be staging the show. This will happen from 2013. The show has helped Gateshead Council achieve a reputation for horticultural excellence. We know that many residents and visitors will miss this popular event, but we have had to take some really difficult budget decisions based around our priorityof continuing to deliver essential services"
The Council, which axed 350 jobs last year, is writing to Nurseries that will be affected. The July event, which has taken place at Gateshead Nursery in Lobley Hill, attracted over 25,000 visitors.

That's a shame, but not surprising. As we all know, councils up and down the country are having to make some difficult decisions. Indeed, I know this only too well as my wife is being made redundant and loses her job in 3 weeks. Maybe this is an opportunity for local businesses and residents to get together and organise something?

I'm surprised that a show attracting 25,000 visitors can't turn a profit on its own. Why does the council have to fund that sort of thing?

Nothing as yet John, thanks for asking. She's applied for plenty, but it seems that age discrimination is alive and well. A bit of a pain in the @rse, as things should have been swinging our way, at this time of life...
