Maybe they've been switched off and you just can't see them. :)

My thoughts exactly! Ditto re none of the above. No bucket collection AGAIN today either.Instead of the bucket lorry, lucky us got a snowplough along our road for the 1st time in over 3 years, WELL it wasn't ploughing, had it's blade about 9 ins off the road and it proceeded to "plough" our verges/bankings. OMG the mess, mud on the road is now worse than the snow and the plough broke our neighbour's telephone cable. That's the 4th time the cable has been broken since the middle of January!
However would I swap living in the countryside for all the modern day "facilities"?...that will be a resounding no, altho atm a nice cosy wee flat in a city might be preferable.

          Ah! Thanks for the info.

Pigeons:- those flying things that the neigbours kept shooting, to keep them off their cabbages.

Sewage/fertiliser:- the stuff in our tanks that used to be pumped into the farmer's field until they made it illegal. I cut and removed the hand pump, from the top of the tank, many years ago.

I managed to do a bit of digging on the allotment this morning, this afternoon I've been mowing the lawn, got warmed up digging, but the mowing was a cold old process.

Couldn't agree more! Unfortunately, no western politician will have the nerve to suggest tax penalties for people with more than one child. Not just for the obvious reasons, but because "the City" would be up in arms.

          Totally agree.

Since when has a newspaper been dead right about the weather. They usually over exaggerate the figures by 10 degrees to sell a few more papers.

I do agree LongK and I also agree with the need for nuclear power.

It strikes me that the global warming problem is very like the global financial position. In spite of what they say, there were many people who were fully aware that a crash was coming - me included. The evidence was very clear - debt levels and other indicators, in real terms, even higher than the levels that caused the 1929 financial crash.

However most people chose not to see it. I heard one city person on the radio say, several years ago, "we all know there is a crash coming - but there is still time to make one more fortune first". In the same way most people chose not to see the problems of global warming now - "there is time to buy one more SUV and turn up the heating first".

Even after its happened - people can't accept reality. Just look at Greece and Cypress - "its unfair - why should we have to pay - let some one else pay".

Incidentally on a gloomy note - I don't think the financial crisis has even started yet. The cause - the extreme levels of debt and the insolvancy of almost all western banks are still there, and almost no attempt has been made to address it. In the same way, I don't think the global warming problem has started yet.

Unfortunately for once, the papers are right. In fact it could last into May.

Forecaster are either excited beyond their limits, or gobsmacked at what's going on. All the forecasters (amateur and professional) that I've spoken too have not many words to be able to describe the current situation.. It is highlighted by a record negative north Atlantic oscillation, which in many cases signals long periods of cold weather, and extremely negative north Atlantic Oscillations (-NAO) are very rare at this time of year... let alone record breaking ones.
