At primary school we had a brilliant cook. Meat pie, toad-in-the-hole, treacle tart and custard, jam roly poly etc. :) The only exception really was Tripe! Just the smell of it made me heave!

At senior school we had to take packed lunches. It was a brand new school and mine was the first year in it. At that point the dining hall and kitchens hadn't been built.

School dinners in my day were very good. Nothing fancy like curry or chicken supreme - don't think they had every heard of them :heehee:

We were also given 'Radio Malt' to build us up. It was a thick gloop, much thicker than syrup, that was very sweet and contained vitamins etc. It was first produced in the 1920's. We all had our own teaspoon that we had to take to school each day for Matron to spoon out our daily dose. We loved our malt. All schools had a Matron in those days, who was like a school nurse, and she used to use the 'nit comb' on us as well.

    John,
in our secondary school we had a teacher at each table and they were always strict but fair. No talking allowed at table. We all had to file out, in order, and get our dinner from the serving hatch. There was no choice of food but it was well cooked, wholesome and plenty. Nobody was allowed to leave the table and go out to the playground until we had all finished. So you didn't become very popular if you dawdled over your food.

      Shiney,

Yes our school dinners were produced before curries or chicken supreme had been invented :old: I still think that a roast and two veg just can't be beaten. Now the kids get served pizza and burgers instead, to me these are snack to be taken in-between proper meals :coffee:

I still haven't got out of that habit of eating fast. Even now because I work with new graduates fresh out of university with a student hunger to match, lunch times usually last about 2 minutes to shovel down a roast dinner. At home I have to work hard to slow down, so I haven't finished before Mrs JWK has even sat down :oink: :oink:

I'm happy to eat slowly nowadays and enjoy good company. :)
