Take 1am last night as an example. That was the time of my lowest temperature last night. Here's what Wunderground looked like at that time:

      Wunderground.gif

I don't spend all my time looking at Wunderground, so it may vary, but whenever I have looked I've never seen much variation for this area.

Here's the Delta-T graph for last April:

      Apr2012DeltaTemp.gif

The ZERO bar is when the min Night (blue) and max Day (red) temperature was WITHIN the forecast range. That's 14 nights in April and just TWO days [out of 26 days on which I made a record] when the forecast range covered the actual temperature.

The -1, -2, ... and +1, +2, ... is the number of days when it was that far outside the forecast range. (5 is "5 or more"). Note that there were zero nights when the temperature was warmer than the highest point on the forecast range, and zero days where it was colder than the lowest point on the range.

I think it is absurd that the forecast provides a range and the temperature is not within that range on the majority of Nights / Days.

How do the people who grit the roads decide if they should go out tonight? If the forecast says "Minimum will be between 2 and 4C" but actually on 50% of nights when that's the forecast it will actually freeze ... gardeners will have not bothered to fleece their spuds.

At the very least they should widen the range that they forecast so that it is right on the majority of nights, even if that means that their range is very broad, otherwise they might as well not issue one and I can have my tax pounds back, thank you very much!

I look at 2 day forecast and base my decisions on that. I look at 5 day forecast for a heads up. For further ahead I read a forum where folk discuss weather; several members there pour over the output from the weather models and argue (quite fervently!) about the likely outcomes. I find their conclusions are often very accurate (in terms of trends) and I make preparations based on any of their pessimistic predictions - but wait for the 2 day forecast before acting :)

I get mine from Ronaldsway Airport via Weather.com or local radio it's usually pretty accurate particularly the temperatures. :)

Can any weather gurus advise why we've not had rain in Manchester for weeks and weeks? We had a teensy bit of snow but that was gone within a day. My grass is brown and the ground is stone dry, to the point where I'm having to water all the plants (which is unheard of in rainy Manchester at this time of year)

Easterly weather pattern? Air from Russia would be dry, picks up some moisture crossing the North Sea, but its only a short distance, dumps that on the East of the country.

Similar reason why East Anglia is relatively dry I imagine - prevailing weather is from South West, that air that has come across the Atlantic, laden with moisture, dumps that on West side of the country, and opposite side stays drier.

                      But I'm guessing ...

I've just looked to see if Meteociel covers the UK too, but sadly no. It gives a pretty accurate forecast for every three hours over 5 days, max and min temps, wind direction and speed, rainfall and pressure, which is handy if you're the sort of obsessive who wants to know exactly what time it'll start raining:biggrin:

The most accurate sites are these three, Theyr, Ogimet and James McGregor's.

I use Theyr for waywalk walks to see exactly what hour it will rain etc.
