Think the surfinia petunias are more expensive because they're grown from cuttings rather than seed which makes them more vigorous than other petunias,they trail to 4ft or more and are very floliferous and you don't need as many to fill a basket

 

Must admit, I do like surfinia's and I do them every year.Only problem I have this year, is that I planted tulips in the same pot thinking they would finish by the time I needed to put the Surfinia's in. Atm, the tulips are still only just coming through

 

Think ill get some surfinia's ordered shortly!

Well, in fairness there was a muddle with an earlier order, and these were Customer Service freebies ... I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that Tracey loves me any more than any of her other customers - such as your good self

 

Not anything like as exciting as Kristens haul of bulbs, but I have just purchased 10 cat litter trays for standing plants in etc as they were cheaper & look like better plastic than the equivalent "made for the garden" alternative... pretty colours too !

 

Elsanta strawberry plants from Aldi were £2.99 for a tray of six, but because the plants on the top tier of shelving were wilting they reduced them all to £1.99 for a tray of 6. I bought 5 trays (30 plants) for £9.95/33p each and took some from a lower tier where they hadn't even started wilting.

I was tempted because my runners out in the open have really suffered from the cold Spring, whereas last year I'd potted up about 300 during the early warm weather.

Then I went to Homebase and found 6 packs of primroses reduced to 50p/pack and found 3 packs in almost perfect condition, so I can restore my front window box/hanging basket display because the cold weather has already killed the primroses in them twice this year.

 

Hmmm ... all my orders have come at once ... nightmare!

Ordered some Lilies a while back (from H. W. Hyde & Son), they came a week ago and have not been able to plant yet. Anglia Bulbs order came the other day ... and today I got a top-up order, placed last week, from Ashridge Trees - 9 Apple Maidens for the espalier in my "Fruit and Nut Walk" [so named by Mrs K after my favourite snack!!], a Crab Apple to help with pollination, a Walnut for the Nut part, and another 250 Hornbeams for the alterations to shape of Room #1 (from rectangular to oval), a few other adjustments to some hedges planted a year or two back, and the rest to go into my nursery bed - I have grown some in a nursery bed before and the transplants 2 years from now will be equivalent to plants that are £2 more (well, 3x the price actually) which represents a huge saving.

My order from Buckingham Nurseries, placed several weeks ago, also arrived. Nearly 100 Hollies that need potting on (sadly an additional 70 or so were far too small, so I will lose a season's growth on them :( ), a few variegated Box I want to grow on (slowly I expect!) for a parterre feature, some varieties of Cob Nut (for the Fruit and Nut walk), some Hybrid Poplars that I want to plant to help with wind break (they should grow 6' to 12' p.a. ), a handful of Birch that I haven't decided what I want to do with ... and some other odds and sods including a Red Lilac for the Hot border, and half a dozen Sum and Substance Hostas - can't now remember what I planned to do with 6 of them!! or why I ordered 5 Shuttlecock ferns ...

There is also a Black Hamburgh grape for the greenhouse - my old one having died suddenly and for unexplained reasons - 30 Strawberry plants and a Gooseberry bush

Some nice spring planting weather this weekend would have made all the difference ...
