in 4 years only manage to grow to 1 foot , but it admirable the fact that it`s the only alocasia/calocasia that still have green leaves

My Colocasia arrived yesterday it looks like a turnip its huge and weighs a tonne , I have potted up and put into the propagator , just to start it off then will move to a much bigger pot, I have set up the mini plastic greenhouse inside my greenhouse so I will put in there when it gets going.

The "common names" are all a bit hit and miss, but Eddoes are usually Colocasia I think? (Might be Alocasia I suppose?)

Suggest you buy more than a couple, reason being that they have travelled a long way and some may be a bit tired; I found that quite a lot rotted before I managed to get them to grow. You may have more luck of course, but I'd recommend some "for insurance" :) Some may have been treated with something to stop them sprouting, and so no (that tends to be common with Sweet Potatoes which can take ages to break dormancy). In fact watch out in case the tops have been cut off (to stop them sprouting :) ). When I bought them from an online Asian supermarket they were about 30p each I think.

Quite often the ones sold, by nurseries, are specific varieties, but if you just want a "clump of large leaved thingies" :) then buying from supermarket much more cost effective - and unless you are having a Gardeners Corner Open Day (Shiney watch out!) who's going to know any different?

I have a real struggle to overwinter the poncy Colocasia varieties I have, and to get them out of dormancy in the Spring, which is a shame as they look really pretty, so I think there is a lot of merit in just buying a "bag of Eddoes" from the local supermarket or, as Sal does, buying every single weird object that they sell and giving it a go!

I can recommend the online Asian Supermarket I used. The carriage will probably only be cost effective if you fancy other things they sell, but we really like their Curry Kits, and in fact we do that now instead of getting a takeaway as its very little more bother than driving 10 minutes to the takeaway ...

                  http://www.theasiancookshop.co.uk/fresh-eddoes-6-3792-p.asp

They are in the Fresh Produce section, and when I ordered that meant you had to order by a certain day, and then there was just one day of the week when they made deliveries.

                  P.S. just checked - 29p each :)

I wonder if Customs will object to them? Obviously they do come in as "food" so who knows ... They will perhaps be fresher than the ones from Supermarket, which may well have been cold-stored, so may be easier to get started.

Don't be tempted to water them until they have sprouted, and then sparingly until they are growing. Once growing they will take/need a lot of water.
