We have a bat box which is a flattish shape with a long, very narrow opening at the bottom. Yesterday I spotted a bird crawling up into it and didn't see it come back out.

Just had a lovely present left for me this morning. There's a dead and mutilated pigeon in one of my troughs. It looks like the sparrowhawk has paid a visit and has decided to have his breakfast - looks fresh too. I want to remove it but I'm feeling a bit squeamish...yikes!

Fern, Sparrowhawks tend to take their prey away or only leave the feathers behind. I suspect it was more likely to be a cat. :)

The robins are pulling apart the lining of some of our baskets to make their nests. It's like a very fine straw and three of the pairs seem to have discovered them! That wouldn't be too bad but a blackbird has also discovered them :rolleyespink:

They aren't keeping still long enough for me to take a photo but this is what they are pinching.

On an overhead cable outside my office window there are 13, what appear to be, baby sparrows flapping their wings and calling for mummy! :)

Lovely Mr Shiney. Very early fledgelings aren't they ? If they have survived what has been chucked at them so far , they should become good breeding stock for the future. Which is what it's all about really. Only the tough got through this challenging Winter.

Goldcrest is the only bird smaller than a wren we have several visit our garden each day they are so tiny but lovely little things.

Shiney, those baskets of yours are ideal for the birds to use for nesting. Brilliant pics of the baby sparrows.

The pictures of the zebra finches reminded me of when I used to have a pair in a cage they laid their eggs in the bottom of the cage and raised some babies in there. It was only an every day sized cage too!

Shiney those babies look like dunnocks. Sharper beaks than sparrows and speckles on their breasts.
No fledglings of any kind here. House sparrows are still building as are the tits.

i was very surprised to see a little family of house sparrows the other day whilst out walking the dogs, three babies & the two parents, only just fledged by the looks of it...one in particular wasn't particularly good at flying & very slow too. amazing really, how did they manage it during this awful weather:hate-shocked:
