Hi, I have a problem with Birds well... Birds Lemon Meringue pie mix. The other half just can't find it anymore. Our supermarkets do their own brands but nothing is like real Birds. If anyone knows where (apart from a online shop selling 24 pack) do say.
Please treat this with some urgency as I have not had a decent lemon pie for ages.

Rhubarb will be ready soon of course.

Can't say i've looked for it, but i'm off to Tesco's in a minute so i'll have a look. I likes Tesco's own brand custard for 6p a packet with my Rhubarb.

A couple of years ago, whist shopping at a supermaket in Italy, I noticed the BIRD'S CUSTARD POWDER was on sale in the 'Pet Food' section !!

This is what you get when you search Tesco's website for Birds Meringue Mix

          birds meringue.png

As none of the major supermarkets sell this anymore (according to www.mysupermarket.com) and it doesn't even appear on ebay (unlike Greens Meringue Mix), the best option is probably to glean a website/email address from a packet of something like Birds Custard and contact them direct.

You'm right, no Bird's ones. Just bought a packet of Green's brand, but forgot to buy the eggs:doh:

Sadly, it will have most likely joined the list of great products that for some inexplicable reason you cannot buy any more; Coleman's French Mustard was one of those sort of products for me and many others (I don't like mustard, with the exception of French and maybe the odd burger mustard) - I emailed Coleman's to ask what had happened, and they responded with some tosh about not being allowed to produce it any more for the UK market.

Cremola Foam is another one I loved as a kid - disappeared all of a sudden. I believe that you can get a clone of it online nowadays, but how good it is, I have no idea.

:eeew: Lemon meringue pie is one of the very few things I simply cannot eat :eeew:

If I should see any, you are more than welcome to them!

It looks like the end of a great British product...a victim of takeovers maybe or as mentioned above just gone without trace.
The Tesco one has a funny after taste for me. The only other thing is to make it from scratch it will be much nicer but not so handy.
In the pet food section Scrungee, now that is terrible

Perhaps it will make a miraculous reappearance one day

            Thanks for replies

I'm sorry, but anything that comes out of a packet purporting to be 'lemon meringue pie' .... isn't - they're either overly sweet and taste of nothing or there's that revolting metallic after-taste of synthetic lemon 'flavouring'.

When it's so quick and easy to make your own (that actually tastes of proper lemon), why would you ever want to use a packet?

Buy or make a sponge or pastry case
Separate 1 egg and mix the yolk with half a can of condensed milk, 28g of caster sugar and the finely grated rind and juice of 2 lemons - pour into case
Whisk the egg white, slowly add 56g caster sugar to make the meringue, spread gently over the lemon mixture and cook in a very cool oven until the meringue is crispy.
