Take no notice of your grumpy neighbour GG, I hope he didn't actually stop you planting your plum tree, he sounds like a manipulative bully.

I agree with all that has been said. Plus, plum roots don't go particularly deep but they can become a nuisance with their runners (roots that go sideways). The runners can develop suckers that can be a nuisance by popping up anywhere. This is unlikely to happen whilst the tree is still doing its utmost to grow bigger. Once it has grown big, quite a few years to go yet, it may start happening.

Waste pipe, 30ft down and encased by clay!!!!!! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Waste pipes aren't that deep. Ever. They're sometime encased in clay. But that's hardly the point; tell him by the time the roots reach that deep he'll have passed away so not to concern himself overly...

Not taking sides, but I know what damage the roots from a tree can cause, we had an ash tree close to the house (chopped down now) and the roots grow everywhere, our soakaway got blocked as the roots from the tree were seeking the water in the soakaway, and had grown up from the soakaway and then up the 4" pipe and then blocked it!!

We had to dig up the front garden and replace the pipe which was totally blocked :ouch1:

Wow! What a horrible job to have to do. :hate-shocked:

I bet your pipe wasn't 30ft deep! :heehee:

Plum roots aren't as invasive as ash and willow. :blue thumb:

No mine were only about 4 feet deep - I got someone in to dig the hole :chicken: and replace the pipe (still very expensive as the slabs had to re-leveled again) ............and 30ft does seem very deep for a waste pipe?

Blimey! That is some blockage, good photos to show the problem. Sorry you had the problem and cost but it has helped show what can happen.

Yes, seeing it for real is an eye opener! :hate-shocked: Thank you for that intel. We have a soakaway (called fosse here) with no means of emptying so t'other half is always concerned about roots of trees nearby.
