That's crazy design. Doesn't that mean that if you go to change the head gasket yourself, but don't this, then there's a high chance that the sump will fall off and spew oil all over your boots, as well as potentially meaning you need two new gaskets (one for the sump as well as the head) instead of just one.

Zigs, if the weather is nice, pack some sarnies and a bottle of pop, and just walk it. 10 miles is nowt if you take your time.

I've heard there's a village somewhere in Somerset that nobody can ever find, but it you do find it, apparently there are chicken as big as cows there, and a days are 48 hours long. Sounds like a right place.

EDIT: Couldn't find the song I was looking for (Nempnett Thrubwell - Wurzels) but here's some poor bloke being pixie led around Somerset looking for it in vain.

You won't find it if you're looking for it:snork:

During the civil war, 2 Suns & 3 Moons were seen over Chard in Somerset.

It's not the best design in the world - and yes, there is a high chance that the sump will loosen or drop when taking the head off; the other problem, that the design engineers apparently didn't think of, is that torsional stresses on head are increased as its not directly attached to the block, but instead attached to the sump and the block is essentially sandwiched, but to a certain extent a free agent. This can lead to heads to warp, particularly if they are subjected to numerous overheat/cooling cycles.

The sad thing is that the K-series was a decent little powerplant from a drivers perspective, with plenty of fizz and a decent amount of torque (hence it is capable of propelling a vehicle the size of a Freelander); the good news is (generally) once repaired with the upgraded kit, they usually go on to have a trouble free existence.

The KV6 powerplant was an absolute cracker of an engine, so much so that Kia bought the licence to make it and used it in their Sedona range for a while from around 2005-ish.

Driving in Somerset I kept getting lost and ending up in the same farmyard until I realised the road was underneath the ankle deep cow poo between their cow sheds and became recognisable again if you kept on driving through it.
