Lotus Berthelotii

After Longk have been showing this plant , I`ve actually been looking for one
in the last 2 season with no luck , today got a massive plant of it ; )

 

Ive also been looking for this for ages and like you couldn't find it.. there was a seed grown one in a garden centre near me a while back but I elected not to get it... bad move.. never seen them since.

I've often seen this as plug plants at garden centres.
In fact I bought one last year.
Years ago I grew the red flowered one, which I prefer, but these days you mainly see the one you have Sal.
I was under the impression back then that they were two different species, but not sure as apart from flower colour there was not much difference.

I think its better as a trailing plant.

 

I've just found this page on Wiki, it's disputing the photo.

I was under the impression the reddish one was L. berthelotii, and the one you have Sal was L. maculatus.
But I'm prepared to be proved wrong.

 

Confused now , didn`t even know there is more then one variety , the garden center that I use buy all from Holland and the usual once rare plant , goes for peanuts ....

I`ve also bought a spider web fatsia at £15 last time I`ve seen one was £45 for a tiny plant ....

what I would like to know now is : how easy is to propagate???? and what`s the best way ?

Here is one of my L berthelotii on the patio outside the kitchen door (next to a Dimorphotca) I just put in as I lost the ones I had for years ...

 

Nice one Sal. I have never seen it for sale - but I will keep my eyes open as its been on my list for some time. Is it easy from seed?

I was just reading about , easy from seeds but will not flower on the first year , apparently realy easy from cutting ....I will try few cutting myself , as it`s so hard to find , I thing I was just lucky today , expecially because my girlfriend bought for me
just to cheer me up ....

 

From New Zealand if I remember correctly! I wonder what this looks like in the wild.

I thought lotus came from the Canaries.

Semi ripe cuttings Sal, for both.
I used to root lotus in a pot with just a plastic dome over them, with a couple of holes for ventilation, I didn't have a propagator in those days.

They're €3 on our local market....if anyone wants one, I could post them at cost
Only the orange variety, though. I used to grow the red one, and think it's much prettier, but haven't seen one for sale for ages. Respect to anyone who can strike cuttings.....haven't sussed it yet.....

with the weather we have it hard even in the propagator , the plastic dome is the best invention ever ..
I was reading that die easly if overwatered or not water enough .....
I need Longk , to know how to overwinter as he had one ....

 

On the dry side overwinter, the bigger the better, then you can trim it back a bit, not hard, once growth restarts.
Overwatering especially when its cool and dull will lead to root rot.
Its not a hard plant to grow, but it likes warmth in summer, but frost free is good enough in winter with some ventillation, damp air is not good.
