Chickenproof forgetmenots...

I've found a way to keep the chooks off the Forgetmenots but i just can't think of a small chickenproof climber or atleast one i can keep in check to cover the posts...i suppose Ivy is the obvious choice but i've got alot of it around the garden already....i'm stumped for ideas so your help would be very welcome please

 

I'd be tempted to plant daylillies at the base of the posts so that they "cover" them and I know daylillies withstand chook invasions

How tall are the posts, loli?

 

It only gets sun up there in a morning Mum....and i'm afraid my chooks have got a taste for Daylillies the posts are just under 4ft....there's 7 posts in all to cover....

 

Razor wire?

Can you dangle something down, rather than/as well as grow something up?

A "cylinder" under the baskets that could contain the trailing plants perhaps (if they have a shallow saucer under them they will gather any water / feed coming through the baskets)

Are you looking for something evergreen so it will do a job in the Winter too?

Only other thought is a circle of chicken wire a foot or so high around the base of the posts, inside which you plant something that will mask the base of the posts, and grow through the chicken wire, so that it will be protected from the Chickens whilst it gets under way.

Is that a Magnolia? If so its a handsome size and must look fit-to-bust at present, fingers crossed for no frosts

Yes it is a Magnolia Kristen....and does look lovely....will get another picture now it's just about reaching it's peak

 

Fatsia x hedera perhaps, rather than "straight Ivy"

Seems as though they want to take over the top end of the garden.

 

My chickens aren't eating my forget-me-nots :(

Mind you ... they have scrabbled in all the bark paths and kicked most of it onto the beds :(

 

Plenty of Blackbirds doing that here Kristen, so having to brush the bark chip back into place every day. :0(

 

Your garden looks lovely loli, must be nice to see the chooks having a little scratch around there.

 

So you're not keen on Forgetmenots then....
