Looks like a wooden box with a thin plastic liner ... I wonder how durable that will prove to be?

Yes very handsome looking but the polythene liner is probably the reason it is so cheap as that wont last very long... Shame as it would look nice in the corner... ;)

Yup, I agree. But it will be like a chocolate fireguard if the plastic doesn't last ... in the third photo the plastic looks very flimsy to me, but could be mistaken as it's only a photo of course :)

Wouldn't the wood "swell" if the plastic eroded? :dunno: (Shoots into the wind with that thought  )

I'm just thinking, 'traditional' style water/whisky butts/barrels aren't lined with anything and they seem to do the job ok, based on the fact the wood would swell

They're crafted so the expansion of the wood makes the joints water tight, not gonna happen with this one.

Whisky barrels are made from oak by very skilled coopers and the metal bands (as well as the swelling) keep them water tight.
The wood looks like softwood and would rot fairly quickly particularly if there's any dampness between the liner and the wood.
I doubt if the plastic liner shown in the photo would last more than a couple of years. Another thing is that there is no hole in the lid to pipe in rain water so one would have to be cut.
I think I'd be tempted to spend a bit more in the short term and buy a better butt and save in the long term.

Put together by a skilled cooper though, not sure you get that thrown on for fifty quid :heehee: plus they use a heated & expanded metal band that then contracts and squeezes the timbers tight within the barrel.

I reckon if the timbers did / could swell then they would rot as a consequence? - but I'm guessing.
