I was wondering if anybody has had success with getting the above to flower? I, at great expense! bought a pot of the above (variety Rartzella) 3 years ago. The plant has increased to a fairly good sized clump now and looks very healthy but not a flower yet. Had a nosey at the new growth this year and not a sign of a flower again. It's in the sunniest spot I can muster and in very good rich soil which is what the label says is required so all I can think of is that's it's maybe too cold for it to do well here. What I don't know is if it only flowers on old stems similar to a Tree Peony and maybe they are not surviving our winters well enough? I have both herbaceous and Tree Peonies which do not badly here so bit stumped as to why this isn't flowering. Wish I'd not bothered with something relatively new and stuck to the old tried and tested. Luckily the foliage is quite nice and goes a great colour in the Autumn, still a very expensive plant for a few nice leaves...grrr.

    That's why I haven't got any!!

I reckon they behave more like tree peonies rather than herbaceous ones? if so not uncommon for them to take 4 years to first-flower?

    INSTITUTEUR DORIAT (herbaceous) £34.95 :(
    BLACK PIRATE (tree) £94.95 :( :(
    SCARLET HEAVEN (intersectional) £140 :( :( :(
And its MONTHS until my birthday

Good god the 1 I bought was expensive (£22.50 still got the label) but the above prices are taking the you know what!

That's an idea Spruce, thanks, won't give it it's usual large amount of rotted manure as a mulch and see it that improves matters. I don't know how old the plant I bought was. At the nursery where I bought it they had big clumps growing in their garden so presume my plant was a section off 1 of the clumps. Their's had flowered and as the nursery was relatively local I thought I'd have success having similar growing conditions.Maybe it's just patience required....not my best feature!!!!

They do have ones available at cheaper prices ... but ... typical for me ... I didn't like them as much as the arm-and-leg priced ones!

Intersectionals must be unbelievably difficult to propagate, or grow incredibly slowly ... or both :(

I too have a tendancy of having "Champagne tastes on a beer income"!
My clump has increased quite well from about 4 stems to maybe 15? but as far as I know the only way to propagate is by division altho presume there will be methods available to the professionals.

That's what I was thinking: "If they have figured out how to mass propagate these they must be laughing all the way to Chelsea" :)

Maybe totally irrelevant to Intersectional Peonies, but Peonies in general tend to take a long time to flower

I brought a small herbaceous root stock about 6 years ago and I might have planted it a bit deeper then it should have been.........anyway this took 3 - 4 years to flower but when it did flower the blooms have been wonderful, and its easy to see why people love this plant.

October 2011 was the first year that it produced seeds but these took the best part of 18 months to germinate and have just shown their faces this spring :), but Peonies in general just tend to take a long time to flower and settle into their new home
