Fabby, as always Mr A :)

My Peonies are coming up in forest-like thickets this year, like yours. Do you think yours are thicker than previous years? I wondered if it was the wet Summer last year ... or whether its just that mine have now been in "long enough" to have grown into a decently thick thicket??

Thank you for showing us around your beautiful garden, and I like your way with plants and colour combination. It certainly give me some food for thought in designing my garden. :dbgrtmb:

Hi Kristen, the Paeonias certainly have put a spurt on in the last few days. Some of my Paeonias, such as Sarah Bernhardt and Bowl of Beauty have been in the ground for around 20 years or more, while others like Karl Rosenfield and Shirley Temple were planted in 2011. The first two are in big clumps although not as tall as the last two!!

I haven't got any pics of Sarah Bernhardt and Bowl of Beauty but they are around 4 times the size, clump wise, to the above. Also as I mentioned Sarah Bernhardt is less tall, but that might have some to do with the variety characteristics:dunno: The other 5 or so Paeonies have been in the ground between 20 and ten years and they do seem stronger this year than last.:coffee::snork:

Hi HsuH, and thank you for your kind remarks.:snork: A lot of the members know the origins of the garden in it's present state and "design", and they will know that I have confessed that I have had no real colour co-ordination or firm design in mind. The garden was built in memory of my wife who was a real gardener with an artist's eye for colour and design but was a much different garden then to what it is now. It had been abandoned by me for several years and I had to start all over again.
I started making new borders, planting hundreds of bulbs and a lot of herbaceous perennials and shrubs as I went along but with no real design in mind, although I guess I followed the principles of a Cottage Garden.
Then, over the years, when it was full to normal standards I put hundreds of more bulbs in along with even more herbaceous perennials planting on top of other layers and did that every year. Trying to plant in the borders is now difficult as when you put in a trowel and move any soil there's something there!!;)
So basically, during the Summer, there is not an inch of soil to be seen, and the flowering season carries on for a fairly long time, and the narrow paths disappear so that when you're walking along them you're surrounded and being brushed by all sorts of foliage and scents. If there is a design it is one of wild chaos and abandon..........but I like it:heehee:

I see you have Teasels and Celandines that some regard as weeds. And did I spot some wild forget me nots?

I think it's a truly lovely garden and what a wonderful tribute to your wife.

I like the idea of "wild chaos and abandon"....it must be jam packed with wildlife!
